ATCHAFALAYA by Kathryn Dunlevie

Kathryn Dunlevie says of 'MISTICK KREWES', "In New Orleans in 1857 a newly formed secret society, the Mistick Krewe of Comus, began the tradition of celebrating Mardi Gras with a torch-lit procession of extravagant floats. My series, Mistick Krewes, is an homage to the rich jumble of that city’s overlapping heritages and the still perceptible aura of its tempestuous history.

Since its founding in 1718, New Orleans’ cultural, political and natural landscapes have been continually invaded and eroded, bought and sold, enriched and transformed.

A visitor to New Orleans might pass through districts, buildings and gardens that exhibit the intertwining of centuries of Native American, Spanish, French, African and American influences. City streets are named for Greek muses, native tribes and 18th-century French nobility. Surrounding swamplands are swallowed by encroaching gulf waters. The atmosphere is charged with an air of mystery, a strange sense of desire, and a whiff of something hazily remembered, beckoning from just around the next corner. It is a place where history is revered, and where it can sometimes be ‘mistickally’ re-experienced.

In these works I am combining my photographs with imagery from popular as well as archival sources. Adding layer upon layer, revisiting each composition again and again, I am working toward scenarios that compel even as they may mislead. Interweaving elements from nature, history and contemporary life conjures up landscapes populated with plants, wildlife, and otherworldly beings, evoking lost times and the Mardi Gras traditions that celebrate them."

Kathryn Dunlevie is a photography-based artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and internationally. Cathy Kimball, former Executive Director of the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, writes of Dunlevie’s work: "Through brilliant compositional detail and manipulation, she creates disconcerting, inexplicable spaces and scenarios - streetscapes that elude mapmakers and interior settings that are almost, but not quite, right."

Born on the east coast, Dunlevie lived in six different states by the time she was 12, and in Paraguay when she was 16. She has a B.A. in fine arts from Rice University, and studied art history and film at the University of Paris, painting at California College of the Arts, and photography in Madrid. She lives in Palo Alto.

Dunlevie has received numerous awards and fellowships, including two Arts Council Silicon Valley Artist Laureate Fellowships. Her work has been exhibited at FotoFest International since 2002, at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, at Studio Thomas Kellner in Germany, in the US Art in Embassies Program in Moscow and in Saatchi Arts’ Best of 2014.

Publications reviewing her work have included Spain’s La Fotografia Actual, Korea’s photo + and Germany’s Profifoto, as well as The New York Times, Camerawork: A Journal of Photographic Arts, Photo Metro, Artweek, and Artlies.

THE CONTINUUM 1 by Maureen Mulhurn-White

Maureen Mulhern-White says, "These six images are part of a new series (“The Continuum”) that I am currently working on. They are photograms that I have printed onto vellum paper and backed with either gold and/or silver leaf. My work tends to include images of all types of animals and plants with an emphasis on horses, cows, floating beings, sea life. We share the rhythms of the moon, time, landscapes, weather with other creatures here on this strange spinning planet and as such we are all the same stardust. I don’t know why horses appear so often in my work… they are quicksilver.

I was born in England and spent my early years there before moving to the U.S. where I became a naturalized citizen. I received a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop. I am captivated by various analog photographic techniques, including making toned silver gelatin photograms, lumen prints, cyanotypes and pigment on vellum backed with gold or silver leaf.

When I am not messing around in the darkroom I am off in the boondocks with my Holga in search of highland cattle, crows and vultures. I am generally drawn to works that combine humor and playfulness with a dash of the macabre."

HONORALBE MENTION

Norman Mark Aragones says, "The main paradigm in my photographic art revolves around the concept of depth (having some level of meaning within the photo and thus attempting to elicit a viewer's reaction through deliberate imagery). My hope is that the viewer comes away with some feeling, idea, and/or perspective from seeing my photo(s). The techniques I use in creating photographic images are not something specific. I just try to work diligently in creating something in particular (that I had envisioned previously in my mind's eye)."

Norman was born in San Francisco, California. As a young person, he learned how important art was in his life. He was sickly throughout much of his childhood. Thus, he had to learn to use his imagination, and it fueled his creativity in art. Currently, he is experimenting with numerous photographic theories and techniques in an attempt to express ideas in a meaningful way visually.

LOST by Rebecca Sexton-Larson
HONORABLE MENTION

Rebecca Sexton Larson says, "From the Outside, Everything Seemed Normal
From the outside, everything seemed normal.

My dad was a career military officer and my mom a dutiful housewife. My parents grew up together — went to elementary school and high school together in a small Kentucky town. They would marry young and begin a life of travel in the military.
From the outside, everything seemed normal - especially when there was a secret to keep.

My dad would leave each morning for work, sometimes traveling for months on end. Mom would hold down the home, alone, and unknowing of the protocols of the outside world. She would play her role smiling and posing in the perfect outfit, attending military coffees with other wives, shopping at the base commissary, and ending each day with a "little" wine helper. Mom's drinking would escalate through the years to the point of incoherence.

The resulting photographs are a starting point for autobiographical exploration from the inside where things were not normal. Each handmade folio contains a unique salt print, painted with watercolor and gouache."

Rebecca Sexton Larson is a Tampa based studio artist working with photographic processes. She graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in Fine Arts and a degree in Mass Communications.

Sexton Larson has been awarded three Florida Individual Artist Fellowships (1998, 2002, and 2008). In 2006, she received an Artist Enhancement Grant from the State of Florida and, in 2005, was commissioned by the City of Tampa as its Photographer Laureate for a year. As Photo Laureate, she documented from her perspective the visual poetry of Tampa using a standard pinhole camera combined with hand-painting b/w photographs.

Sexton Larson's photographs are in numerous significant collections throughout the country, including Polaroid; Progressive Corporate Art; Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young); Polk Museum of Art (Lakeland); Cassilhaus (Durham, NC); Museum of Fine Arts (St. Petersburg); the Tampa Museum of Art (Tampa); Historical Museum (Santa Fe); and Candela Gallery (Richmond, VA). Many of her one-of-a-kind works are in private collections.

Her photographs have been featured in photographic publications including Salted Paper Printing by Christina Z. Anderson, The Polaroid Project by various curators, Poetics of Light: Contemporary Pinhole Photography by Eric Renner and Nancy Spencer, View Camera Magazine, Black and White Magazine, Square Magazine, Afterimage, and others.
