HONORABLE MENTION

Jennifer Esneault says, "Since I was a small child, I have been a teller of stories. A vivid imagination coupled with anxiety and sleep disorders have long fueled my need to express myself through evocative and rich elements of story. The receipt of my first camera at the age of nine stoked that desire to tell my story through images.

Each of my images represents a struggle, a desire, a diagnosis, or flawed logic. On these tiny play stages, we explore the downfall of naivete, the dangers of wall-building, the monsters who stalk us in the dark. And yet, we remain hopeful and curious as a child; one who is unafraid of what lies beyond the chambers of the mind."

Jennifer Esneault is a conceptual photographic artist in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Her conceptual work is informed by her own experiences and imagination, including depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and trauma.

Her subject matter is the quiet inner workings of a human mind, fraught with anxiety, hope, beauty, and connectedness. Her work seeks to inform the viewer of the transformation of a psyche over time. Through light, shadow, and universal symbolism, she tells stories that reside in us all.

When not creating photographic artwork, she spends her time painting abstract and mixed media pieces and writing poetry and other prose. She is an active member of the Louisiana Photographic Society, serving as its exhibit coordinator and web master. Most often, you can find her at home with her husband and two children.

FAMILY by Norman Aragones
HONORABLE MENTION

Norman Mark Aragones says, "The main paradigm in my photographic art revolves around the concept of depth (having some level of meaning within the photo and thus attempting to elicit a viewer's reaction through deliberate imagery). My hope is that the viewer comes away with some feeling, idea, and/or perspective from seeing my photo(s). The techniques I use in creating photographic images are not something specific. I just try to work diligently in creating something in particular (that I had envisioned previously in my mind's eye)."

Norman was born in San Francisco, California. As a young person, he learned how important art was in his life. He was sickly throughout much of his childhood. Thus, he had to learn to use his imagination, and it fueled his creativity in art. Currently, he is experimenting with numerous photographic theories and techniques in an attempt to express ideas in a meaningful way visually.

LOST by Rebecca Sexton Larson
HONORABLE MENTION

Rebecca Sexton Larson says, "From the Outside, Everything Seemed Normal
From the outside, everything seemed normal.

My dad was a career military officer and my mom a dutiful housewife. My parents grew up together — went to elementary school and high school together in a small Kentucky town. They would marry young and begin a life of travel in the military.
From the outside, everything seemed normal - especially when there was a secret to keep.

My dad would leave each morning for work, sometimes traveling for months on end. Mom would hold down the home, alone, and unknowing of the protocols of the outside world. She would play her role smiling and posing in the perfect outfit, attending military coffees with other wives, shopping at the base commissary, and ending each day with a "little" wine helper. Mom's drinking would escalate through the years to the point of incoherence.

The resulting photographs are a starting point for autobiographical exploration from the inside where things were not normal. Each handmade folio contains a unique salt print, painted with watercolor and gouache."

Rebecca Sexton Larson is a Tampa based studio artist working with photographic processes. She graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in Fine Arts and a degree in Mass Communications.

Sexton Larson has been awarded three Florida Individual Artist Fellowships (1998, 2002, and 2008). In 2006, she received an Artist Enhancement Grant from the State of Florida and, in 2005, was commissioned by the City of Tampa as its Photographer Laureate for a year. As Photo Laureate, she documented from her perspective the visual poetry of Tampa using a standard pinhole camera combined with hand-painting b/w photographs.

Sexton Larson's photographs are in numerous significant collections throughout the country, including Polaroid; Progressive Corporate Art; Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young); Polk Museum of Art (Lakeland); Cassilhaus (Durham, NC); Museum of Fine Arts (St. Petersburg); the Tampa Museum of Art (Tampa); Historical Museum (Santa Fe); and Candela Gallery (Richmond, VA). Many of her one-of-a-kind works are in private collections.

Her photographs have been featured in photographic publications including Salted Paper Printing by Christina Z. Anderson, The Polaroid Project by various curators, Poetics of Light: Contemporary Pinhole Photography by Eric Renner and Nancy Spencer, View Camera Magazine, Black and White Magazine, Square Magazine, Afterimage, and others.
