SUMMER IN SAN FRANCISCO-8 by Marsha Guggenheim
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Marsha Guggenheim says, "Growing up in the San Joaquin Valley, I remember summers in great detail.

In particular, I have strong memories of the weather – temperatures in the triple digits and the air hot and still.

Clothing seemed optional; we would wear as little as possible. The local swimming pool kept us busy and distracted from the heat.

Many days, I would dream of a much larger pool, maybe the ocean, where I could surf and feel the relief of the cool air.

Years later, I live in San Francisco, near the ocean, where summers are a very different experience.

Early morning, a thick blanket of fog rolls in, obscuring the views. The cool summer breezes are steadfast, the ocean water freezing cold and, at times, the waves high and mighty.

Summer time in San Francisco is an oxymoron. Yet, with a jacket and gloves, I can’t resist the allure of that season, always changing and different.

My dreams of surfing in the ocean have been reduced to walking barefoot on the beach or lying on the sand to warm my bones.  Surrounded by the cawing of seagulls flying over head and the sound of the surf is, for me, home."

Marsha Guggenheim is a fine art photographer living in San Francisco.  Her interest in photography comes from a deep love and curiosity for art and art history. Storytelling through pictures and street photography is where she is most energized.

With a strong emphasis on natural light, she enters into a stranger's space, seeking the unexpected.

Marsha’s work is included in private collections and is shown in galleries across the United States.

INDICANT III by Allison Roberts
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Allison Roberts says, "This series, Indicant, is part of a larger body of work which addresses memory, place, and identity as experienced during periods of change; the unexpected paths we navigate looking for a way forward.

By projecting and abstracting simple, directional signs into impenetrable, dense woods at night, the clarity of the direction is lost or distorted and the path forward is uncertain.

The idea for this series was initially inspired by my feelings of unease at twilight which led to an intense longing for the security and comfort of the familiar, of “home."

Bio:  I am a lens-based artist working with photography and projections to address the unease and uncertainty that accompany transitions.  My  interest in layers, textures, and surfaces has consistently impacted my work across media, and now informs my approach to physically layering photographic images through projections in my site-responsive practice.

Born and raised in Oklahoma, I completed my MFA in photography and printmaking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and my BA in Fine Arts and Photojournalism at Indiana University- Bloomington."

FATHER LI, 2018 by Brian Orozco
(Click on image for larger view)

Brian Orozco says, "These three photographs are part of a larger project titled On Sunday that captures members of an imagined and assembled religious community.

The project ties together scenes from a number of spiritual spaces and practices around New England, creating an amalgamation of performances of the sublime and the spectacular.

As someone who grew up religious yet no longer identifies as religious, I think about the journey behind desperately searching for purpose in the meaningless and meaningful.

Sometimes you hear a knock on the door, and answer it hoping to find something; at times, you swear the answers you're looking for are in a book and in a cool night.

These subjects are quite young, arguably when some of the more intense twists and turns along the journey are happening."

Brian Orozco is a photographer, playwright, and educator based in Brooklyn.

He received his B.A. in American Studies from Yale University in 2018. He has exhibited work in small solo and group shows in New Haven, Connecticut, and has been included in publications such as MATTE Magazine and the Yale Literary Magazine.

His latest play, Prelude to Everything Else, was produced at the Yale Repertory Theater by the Yale Dramat Association this past spring.

HOLES by Carl Shubs
(Click on image for larger view)

Carl Shubs says, "I am a psychologist in private practice and also a contemporary fine art photographer, based in Los Angeles.

My photos capture the moments that surround us and that we often overlook in the mundane of everyday living.

I want the viewer to reach beyond the obvious, feel an emotion, or think about something in a new way.  This is what I also do in my psychology practice.

I prefer to shoot whatever catches my eye as I go out into the world, and I call these “found images.”  I’m drawn to singular scenes like a boy in a lingerie shop, a tree in the middle of nowhere with sneakers hanging from it at moonrise, or something about shapes, patterns, or colors.  My photos are typically presented without compositing or major Photoshop editing.

I love when someone thinks that an image is set up rather than captured or made by photographic manipulation when actually it is what the camera saw.  I’m delighted when people don’t know what they are looking at in a photo, but love it anyway.

The Journey reflected in this submission is that street photography is my primary orientation, yet in looking for those spontaneous moments I have also come to see the objects that we typically miss.

I call that project Overlooked Subjects of Art. It focuses on the things we ignore or don’t even notice because we think of them as mundane. It includes three bodies of work: 1) objects that are typically disregarded and go unrecognized as being worthy subjects of art, 2) things that are overlooked but deserve notice and appreciation because of their graphic elements, and 3) finding abstract qualities in things we pass by or even step over.  Naturally, some of the images may overlap these categories, as is the case with these submissions."

Throughout Carl Shubs’ 30 year career as a psychoanalytic psychologist practicing in Beverly Hills, CA, he has also been a self-taught contemporary fine art photographer. His first exhibit was in 2011, as part of a group show at the Museum of Neon and Kinetic Art, in Los Angeles. That recognition encouraged him to deepen his commitment to photography and to begin showing his work.

In 2014 he was accepted into membership in the Los Angeles Art Association (LAAA). His work is held in private collections and he has exhibited nationally and internationally. He has been in many juried exhibitions (including over 20 in 2016 and also in 2017, while approaching that number in 2018). His acclaimed jurors have included Elizabeth Avedon, Andi Campognone, Debra Klomp Ching,  Brian Paul Clamp, Catherine Couturier, Shana Nys Dambrot, Scott B. Davis, Crista Dix, Peter Frank, Herair & Lori Garboushian, David Garnick, Greg Gorman, Mark Steven Greenfield, Jim Morphesis, Aline Smithson, and Richard Vogel.

He has won awards and honors, had his work published in such prestigious publications as Lenscratch, F-Stop Magazine, and the Photographer's Forumhardcover book Best of Photography 2015, and been in a digital display at the Louvre.

He is proud to have curated a combination solo exhibit and group show that included seventeen amazing artists who work in a variety of media.  He served as curator for L.A. Photo Curator’s online exhibition “Street Shooting.”

BIOPSY #2 by Constance Thalken
(Click on image for larger view)

"Illness is the night-side of life, a more onerous citizenship.

Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place.”

Susan Sontag, Illness as Metaphor

Constance Thalken says, "During 14 months of treatments for invasive breast cancer, I collected all the bandages that were applied to and removed from my body during treatments.

The practice was not premeditated for artistic purposes at that time, but merely an attempt to secure control over circumstances in which I had none.

Archived in Ziploc bags with dates and treatment identifying information, I later photographed fifty-five of these “discard” materials on the surface of my bathroom floor.

Only at one point during treatments was I compelled to photograph myself. I wanted to acknowledge my fortitude in passing through the most demanding phase of treatments.

I also was physically transformed and no longer recognized myself. I was curious what the scrutiny of the lens would reveal.

For me, the self-portraits bear the psychological and emotional complexities of undergoing an experience that brings all former certainties into question."

Constance Thalken’s photographs often explore the complexity of loss and mortality. They have been featured in both national and international galleries and museums.

Her work is in the permanent collections of the High Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, The Bunnen Collection, the Zuckerman Museum of Art, Yale University Library, and other private collections. 2016 BULLIS CHARTER SCHOOL, SOUTH CAMPUS. LOS ALTOS by Craig Schwanfelder
(Click on image for larger view)

Craig Schwanfelder says of his series, 'Half Court - Full Court', "Basketball and art have always been passions in my life.

When I realized my basketball skills were not quite NBA caliber, I pursued an education in the arts with a focus on photography.

After high school in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I took night classes at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. where I studied black and white photography. I then went on to study the commercial and technical aspects at the International College of Professional Photography in Melbourne, Australia for two years. I finished my BFA in photography at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Subsequently, I discovered a way to combined my two great loves of basketball and art, and the project Half Court - Full Court was born. Basketball can be found everywhere, and is accessible to people from all walks of life. I have photographed all types of full courts including neighborhood parks, community recreation centers, grass courts in Hawaii, and schools.

As my ability in multiple exposure photography technique flourished, I discovered a way to capture the feeling of both a full court and half court perspective in a single image. This development resulted in an original view of basketball courts, presenting the viewer with the experience of standing at center court and looking at both basketball hoops simultaneously. Each basketball court location is unique, creating a portfolio of images that highlight the remarkable diversity of settings for a game that unifies people worldwide."

THINGS WE SAVED by Crystal Tursich
SECOND PLACE
(Click on image for larger view)

Crystal Tursich says, "In Silence is a series of photographs that visualize loss and the looming emotions following such an experience.

As I heal both physically and mentally, I have turned to my camera to construct and document the moments, object, and feelings that connect me to my loss. The resulting images serve as artifacts, creating a visual archive of my experience and the accompanied complex emotions that cannot be articulated through words alone."

Often drawing on memory and emotion, Crystal Tursich creates diaristic work that hovers between staged self-portraits and constructed memories.

Recently, she has been included in group exhibitions in Cincinnati, Minneapolis and Louisville. As a plastic camera and film photography enthusiast, she is pleased to have been included in both the Somerville Toy Camera Festival and Soho Photo Gallery's Krappy Kamera Exhibition.  Last year, Tursich participated in a collaborative project with six other women that was shown in Columbus and Peoria. She was also invited to create site specific work for the Franklin Park Conservatory with others who attended or taught in the Photography Department at CCAD.

Crystal Tursich lives in Columbus, Ohio and serves as an Upper School Art Teacher at Columbus Academy specializing in photography. Previously, Tursich has held positions as a Lecturer at The Ohio State University and an Adjunct Instructor at Columbus College of Art & Design. CLEV by Danielle Faulkner
(Click on image for larger view)

Danielle E. Faulkner says, "From a very young age, my relationship with men has always been strained.

I am unbearably cynical, and an extremist with emotions. Initially, due to daily mental manipulation exhibited by my molester, then later solidified by being kicked out twice by the same family member. Though it wasn’t until my mid-twenties that, at the time, my grandfather was left with no other logical choice but to pick up the pieces.

As the only male figure left standing in my life, I looked up to him. (More so when the cancer came back.) He was my source of wisdom, logic, and expressions of love. On Friday January 13th, 2017, we lost him. Since that day on, my level of independence is tested; there isn’t a safety net anymore.

That realization terrified me. Am I strong enough, wise enough to lead my own life?

During Christmas of the same year, I received a book entitled, "Be Here Now" by Ram Dass. Inspired by its perceptions of death, understanding where you come from, and seeing past the veil, "There Are No Accidents" was created as an exploration and reflection on the positive, uplifting men in my life; my father, grandfather and my boyfriend."

Of falling leaves and melting
snow, of birds
in their delights
Some poets sing
their melodies
tendering my nights
sweetly.
My pencil halts
and will not go
along that quiet path.
I need to write
of lovers false
and hate
and hateful wrath
quickly.
- Maya Angelou

Raised in downtown Brooklyn, New York City, Danielle Faulkner is an emerging and passionate photographer & artist, mainly placing energy on matters of the heart. Whether it deals with political ties, as is evidenced by, A Face of Danger, commenting on the rising racial tensions between local armed forces and people of color. Or with more inner, self attentive and reflective themes as seen in the series’ “When It Will Come” and “More Than A Cat.”

In both bodies of work, as is the case with all of her work, Ms. Faulkner uses her previous education in clinical psychology as an advantage to better analyze and question the world she was born into, the one she resides in and her place/purpose in it all.

There is a continuous unconscious action and desire to transcend the past, thus allowing little to no room for the “quiet path.” The content tends to exhibit itself through the use of both a film and digital camera, text, as well as created and found images.

It is specifically this metamorphosis that excites Danielle the most as an artist. Though no matter how daunting it may become, as it certainly was watching herself grow in college at the School of Visual Arts, it is done partially with the hope that one-day that kind of courage will infiltrate her personal and daily life.

If the work should simultaneously inspire, comfort or encourage its viewers, it is only more of a blessing and a reason to keep photographing.

BEYOND IMAGINATION

I had left one morning with some belongings in a handbag,

Not knowing where I was going or why I had taken the road on that specific dawn.

An incessant, profound desire to leave,

Since my very young childhood,

To leave the infernal circle which defines me,

limits me and makes me suffocate

For some mysterious reason

I had accepted the risks of adventure.

For there's a voice,

Underlying all events,

And scenes,

There's a threat,

In all appearances,

Of joy that left,

I felt deserted,

Planted,

In an unknown soil,

Stranger to its disorder,

Inexplicable Chaos,

Unacceptable filth,

Peculiar hygienic manners,

Sometimes funny methods,

Unfamiliar ways of doing very common acts,

Outrageous at times,

Yet I was attracted

By the white clouds,

The faithful black-skinned fishermen,

Who believed in a goddess named Mary, whom they worship as a fetish,

I was attracted by the strong vivid colors,

Put together in an odd way,

Not so harmonious to my stranger's eye,

Yet delicious and kind,

I was driven by a sense of innocence

And the childish pride,

Of poor-people solutions for a better life,

And the elegance of women amid a chaotic land,

And men not even aware of their savage life,

Inhuman, brutal and harsh,

Imprisoned in a continent,

Without future,

Or hope,

Living in another time,

Aspiring to expand and multiply like in a pink kaleidoscope to the African sky.

ALONE IN SEATTLE by Eric Renard
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

“A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find that after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us.”
- John Steinbeck

Eric Renard says, "Photography, like life is a journey that explores the struggle between light and shadow. It is a journey of discovery without a specific destination.

Some journeys cover great distances and others internally transform us. In both cases, my goal is to capture an image or state of light that stirs up unexpected feelings or memories that will connect the image to the viewer.

This selection of images explores frozen moments of smaller journeys, which may include emotional journeys too. Where are these people heading? What has paused them on their journeys. Despite being in busy places, they seem very much alone. Our heroes are an old man walking on the streets of Cuzco, Peru, a young woman coming out of the shadows in Seattle, Washington, and a young girl peering through a barricade at was once the World Trade Centers in NYC."

Eric Renard is based in Los Angeles, CA and has been creating photographs for over three decades.

Eric M. Renard is a Los Angeles based Photographer. Born in New York, he attended school in the Riverdale, NY. Eric spent his summers in Maine, where he was first exposed to photography and dark rooms. Eric’s passion for photography was reignited at Tufts University in Boston, where he studied under Sigfried Halus.
After graduating, Eric moved to San Francisco, as an architectural photographer before moving to Los Angeles. Eric’s unique exposure to both urban and rural living can be seen throughout his work, as he is equally at home in both settings. Whether working in black and white or vibrant colors, his urban cityscapes and rural landscapes often reflect an eerie sense of peace and quiet, rarely portraying more than one or two people.
Eric’s photography has been exhibited in galleries in Los Angeles and Minnesota and viewed digitally around the world, receiving numerous awards.

HEADING HOME by Eric Renard

“A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find that after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us.”
- John Steinbeck

Eric Renard says, "Photography, like life is a journey that explores the struggle between light and shadow. It is a journey of discovery without a specific destination. Some journeys cover great distances and others internally transform us. In both cases, my goal is to capture an image or state of light that stirs up unexpected feelings or memories that will connect the image to the viewer.

This particular journey took me to Churchill in Northern Canada in search of Polar Bears, which were not the subject of this exploration. Instead, I found a Curtiss C-46 freight plane, whose final journey was abruptly interrupted, a mysterious shipwreck, which disappears during swirling mists and high tides and the northern terminus of Canadian rail line. All three images are of vehicles of massive journeys to far away and perhaps exotic places, now slowly journeying to decay in desolate places."

Eric Renard is based in Los Angeles, CA and has been creating photographs for over three decades.

CLOUDS by Gayle Kirschenbaum

Gayle Kirschenbaum says, "I am an observer of life and teller of stories - stories which have impact. My eyes wander, seeing all around me as my ears listen to the sounds and the voices. Born with an insatiable curiousity to learn and specifically to learn about others, I am drawn to traveling near and far. I see and capture moments in time - colors, shapes, feelings, moods, expressions, and relationships.

My life is a journey and I share it through my art whether it is film, photography, art, poetry, prose or story. I invite my audience, reader, viewer into my world to see what I see, to feel what I feel,  and often finding their own personal connection and experience. It is my mission to help, enlighten, entertain and bring knowledge and joy to others."

Gayle Kirschenbaum is a creator who expresses herself in many forms. She began life as a visual artist and started taking photos where she spent hours in her darkroom. She found herself shooting stories with her photographs and painting them in an impressionist way.  Her desire to use words and sound led her to moving images.  She became an Emmy award-winning filmmaker whose films and programs have premiered on Netflix, HBO, and Discovery. They include Look At Us Now, Mother!, A Dog’s Life: A Dogamentary, My Nose and  Little Parents.

Her last film led to an invitation to give a TEDx talk called No More Drama With Mama about forgiveness. She speaks and teaches on this topic.  Gayle has found herself returning to her first love, photography.

Most recently her photographs were exhibited in Spain at the Barcelona Foto Biennale in October 2018.

THROUGH THE VALLEY by Howard Lewis
HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Howard Lewis is a New York based artist whose artwork explores the concepts of light, form and the perception of time.

Through his camera, Lewis strives to capture the dimensional qualities of form as rendered by light, illuminating the texture and age of each subject through the synthesis of photographic elements.

While Lewis considers himself a lens-based artist first and foremost, his interest in creating three-dimensional welded metal sculpture that relate to his Inner Workings photography series is a personal journey that is ongoing.

A journey is a function of time so with these photographs Lewis strives for visualization of both dimensions. The photographs are of different subject matter, but all are about a journey from one physical place to another as well as the dimension of time.

Lewis takes a two dimensional photograph and provides additional visual meaning or a third dimension similar to sculpture but staying within the media parameters.

Howard Lewis’ photographs have been exhibited in galleries and cultural centers internationally, including the Gladstone Regional Museum and Gallery in Queensland, Australia, Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa; the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania; the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science in Midland, Michigan;the New York Center for Photographic Arts; the Black Box Gallery in Portland, Oregon; the Courtyard Gallery in Connecticut; and the Grey & Gove Gallery in New York City.

IMAGE: Through The Valley- A journey through Monument Valley is a journey through time. The dawn fog carried by steady wind makes its way over and around one of the iconic structures. A ribbon of dirt road weaves through the landscape pointing the way for anyone who wants to imagine the primal forces shaping our planet over thousands of years.

Dinosaur Tracks- Following one hand painted sign to another my drive through the West took me to this Navajo concession and to what seemed to my NY sensibilities, as the middle of nowhere. A guide showed me a knowledgeable time-based geological journey as well as learning about the Native American journey from a horrendous past to a still challenging present.
