Safi Alia Shabaik says of this series, 'Personality Crash: Portrait of My Father Who Suffers From Advanced Stages of Parkinson’s Disease, Dementia and Sundowner’s Syndrome', "This collaborative body of work explores the human condition and how one maintains a grasp on this reality in the confines of a deteriorating mind and body. This work presents one man’s journey and struggle with disease and loss of self, in order to tell a universal story that everyone will experience on some level in their lives.
The work was made with love, compassion and my desire to understand my father’s mental illness, to be able to distinguish between the individual and the disease, as well as tell his personal story. It was made to help others currently on or soon to experience a similar journey, to help erase the stigma of mental illness and to humanize the experience of someone who is losing their sense of self.
Something about my father was out of the norm. The year was 2007 and I was living 3000 miles away. I knew the time had come for me to return to my family to help my mother figure out what was ailing my father. A few years after my return, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. My mom and I had suspected this for a while but now with the official diagnosis, we knew that we’d have a long road ahead in caring for my father.
I began my photographic collaboration with my father in late 2013 when he started to show stronger external manifestations of Parkinson’s. As one of his primary caregivers, I witnessed his struggles firsthand on a daily basis. Together we agreed to make this collaborative body of work as we knew that it would be important not only for both of us to understand my father’s disintegration, but also for our extended family and for the community at large. I continued to document him for the following four years through his mental, physical and emotional changes. It’s been a very difficult and heart-wrenching journey to watch this person that I have known and depended on my whole life, and love dearly, become so incapacitated and dissolve into confusion and paralysis. Sadly I know I am not the first, the last, nor alone in this experience.
My father passed away on January 1st, 2018, after a ten year (diagnosed) battle with Parkinson’s, the last two years of which were complicated by Dementia and Sundowner’s Syndrome. It was through this photographic collaboration that I came to a new understanding of these diseases and mental illness in general, of my father’s relationship to his self and the changes he was experiencing, of how to distinguish the disease from the individual, and of the process of anticipatory grief."
Safi Alia Shabaik discovered art and photography at the age of five, when her mother enrolled her in a pinhole camera class at the California Museum of Science and Industry.
She earned her B.A. with honors in Fine Art at UCLA, where she was nominated for the Levinson Scholarship and studied with many accomplished contemporary artists, including Catherine Opie, Richard Jackson, Paul McCarthy, Barbara Drucker and Mark Durant. She has lived and worked in both Los Angeles and New York.
While living in NY, she became fashion stylist, photographic documentarian, personal assistant, travel companion, and confidante to the legendary and iconic Ms. Grace Jones, both in her personal and public life for all global performances and appearances. Safi was given free-reign to photograph anytime they were together.
Her work has appeared in Grace Jones’s book "I'll Never Write My Memoirs", on the cover of Artillery Magazine, on the Los Angeles Times website, is part of many private collections, and has been exhibited in both solo and group shows in many galleries nationally.
She is an interdisciplinary artist working in photography, mixed-media collage and assemblage, printmaking, sculpture and experimental video.
Safi currently lives in Los Angeles where she works as a fine art, event and portrait photographer. She is a member of the Los Angeles Street Collective, a charter member and teaching assistant at the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) as well as a volunteer in the Fossil Lab at the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits. She is a lover of the human form and an award-winning licensed mortician.

- Now that more dementia has set in, I often wonder how cognizant he is about what is actually happening to him. There are fewer and fewer moments where his personality shines through (though we still do get glimpses of him) and increasing moments of confusion, hallucination, disorientation, and major disconnect from simple instruction and the tactile world around him. He has become my child that I protect and care for - I literally parent my parent. It is simultaneously endearing and heartbreaking, but through this journey I have learned the depths of my capacity to love as well as the profundity of my anguish. This image speaks to the loneliness of the disintegration of self and what I imagine it must feel like from his perspective. Made from a place of love and respect.

"Personality Crash: Portrait of My Father Who Suffers From Advanced Stages of Parkinson's Disease, Dementia and Sundowner's Syndrome // 1st November 2017" - Life Lines. There have been several moments over the last week or two when I thought my dad was making his exit and taking his last breath. In those moments I tried to comfort him and let him know that we love him, that it's okay for him to do what he needs to do and that we will be okay. Each time he pulled through and came back to us here. His grip on this world - his survival drive - is very strong and I am thankful for that. When I made this image, initially it spoke to me of his fragility in the aging process ... but now I see that it symbolizes the strength, endurance, perseverance and resilience of my father's will to live. Even though his mind is caught between reality and hallucinations (from the sundowner's and dementia), his body (whether rigid from the Parkinson's or dyskinetic from the medicine) is still latched to this dimension and determined to stay for a little while.

"Personality Crash: Portrait of My Father Who Suffers From Advanced Stages of Parkinson's Disease, Dementia and Sundowner's Syndrome // 7th November 2017" - One day in early November, my father was convinced that we needed to go to “the place”. He kept insisting that I take him there but couldn’t tell me the name of it, its location or anything about it other than calling it “the place”. He was very passionate about going there so I promised him that the very next day I would take him there, but he would need to guide me as I drove. The next day, my mom and I packed a picnic lunch, got my dad in the car (no easy feat as he is basically wheelchair-bound now), piled in the car and took off. He led the way ... right on Ventura ... left on Fulton ... right on Moorpark ... and then he no longer knew where to go. Five minutes had passed. At my mom's suggestion, I drove to a park nearby where my parents had often brought us in my youth. We sat there in the car, parked under a tree, eating our picnic in the car. I knew there would be no real destination but I wanted to give my father this adventure as a gift and a scenery change from the monotony of his home-bound life. This adventure was worth the massive undertaking that it was just to see him perk up and feel a moment of freedom from this debilitating disease. I took a detour home - drove him along Mulholland - so he could see the pretty view and the valley from above. The things we do from a place of love.

My Artwork has been essentially motivated by my anorexic addiction who led me to despair and darkest holes.
After many years of research, I became able to work for people, respect delays , assume responsabilities and avoid failure.
Photography, for me, began to work as logotheraphy: will of meaning, reasons to live.
Self-portraits became my primitive tools to express the grief I was going through : I was nobody, nothing, I felt I had to die as soonas possible."

EVERY WOMAN I KNOW #17 by Alyssa Meadows

BEST SERIES
Alyssa Meadows says, "My most recent project, Every Woman I Know, is a series of portraits depicting every woman I personally know who has been a victim of sexual violence.
Everyone who participates is photographed anonymously, and those who elect to have a public portrait done are photographed both ways.
This further emphasizes that despite the safety of many voices and the movement of #MeToo, many women still do not feel comfortable coming forward publicly, and this is visibly represented by how many women only participate anonymously. In these exceedingly hostile times, the voices of women need to be echoed more than ever, and our stories need to be heard. When we can elect a man who openly admits his disdain for consent as our nation's leader, or when we need over 30 women to come forward with accusations before we doubt the credibility and character of a beloved comedian, we exhibit an obscene failure to listen to and believe women's stories.
By standing together, we can change the perception that this is not a serious or frequent issue and bring attention to how necessary a shift is in our society's values regarding women and our place in it.
Bio:I grew up in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, and studied photography at University of Miami and Penn State University. Photography has been a deep-seated passion for years, and a supremely rewarding endeavor.
My body of work predominantly explores photojournalism, documentary, & reportage, often focusing on political issues from environmental concerns to the ramifications of rampant sexism in our society. If I don't have my camera in hand, it's most likely because I'm hiking, kayaking, or producing documentary films.
My experience in the photographic industry is varied and focused heavily on strengthening the community. I serve on the ASMP-NY Board, and recently revitalized the Young Photographers Alliance summer mentorship program. I also freelance as a Photo Editor for Shutterstock, and was previously a Photo Editor with People Magazine. Whether I’m working on personal projects, bringing a client's vision to life, or developing behind-the-scenes & promotional materials for films, having my camera in hand is a natural extension of self.
I aim to capture critical moments, share important stories, and explore life's greatest adventures, while lending inspiration to others.

Amelia Hennighausen says, "In July 2017, nearly a year after the tragedy, I visited several of the “Zona Rossa” (red zone) towns, to show the damage of the August 25, 2016 earthquake and aftershocks.
Many small towns in the Marche region of the Sibillini Mountains were devastated by these earthquakes. Uninhabitable, left "as is," after families ran out in the middle of the night. My friend lived in the region, as did her family and friends, who I’ve become increasingly close to over the years.
Our friendship, which started as pen-pals in 1984, led to a very tight knit feeling—one I had never known. It felt as if it was my community, too. My best times were spend in Marche over the past 30 years.
I was on the photo news desk at The Wall Street Journal as images poured in during the original devastation. I was in agony, trying to make sure my friend, her family, and those I loved were going to be okay. The impending grief that I felt still makes me sick.
I was fortunate to eventually find that those I knew were safe, albeit with some of their homes uninhabitable.
I show these images as part of a larger series and short documentary in the works about the complexity of the results of these earthquakes. Many people, from cafe owners to politicians to farmers, feel strongly about their loss.
Whole communities are being moved, and old, irreplaceable buildings are being put together one tiny piece of marble at a time. The impact is social, economic, and very emotional. The bright sky defies the eerie sadness and loss when I walked around these towns. All abandoned, yet the grief continues.
I first became interested in photography after seeing Mary Ellen Mark’s “Streetwise” series in the mid-1980s. As a freelance photo editor for more than a decade, I’ve worked on such diverse projects as Discover magazine, IHeartRadio app, the NYC Marathon, Women’s Health, and books on design and fashion, to name a few. I’ve been a columnist and blogger on photography and teach photojournalism at Fordham College Lincoln Center. I created visual content at Bloomberg Digital for over three and a half years, and at The Wall Street Journal for print and web for two years.

EMPTY PILLOW by Andrea Rosenthal

Andrea Rosenthal says, "In this series, I’ve been exploring light in response to the loss of five dear friends, photographing it as it came through the windows of my home and touched everyday objects.
In the process, light became as much about memory and grief as what it illuminated.
“Dark Light” struggles with the commonalities of life that grief both highlights and subsumes. I utilize the power of the camera to see and capture light as it appears; both very much of this world and yet, not.
The works alternate between abstraction and realism and use reality as a springboard for the viewer’s imagination.
Light, as both grief and its salve, is the emotional and compositional conduit of these works. Like grief, light finds its way into every recess, showing us parts of our lives that we thought were safe from its pain. At the same time, light represents the presence of loved ones in my life. It also is a metaphor for the healing process, the way through which acute pain eventually subsides and transforms itself into a warm memory of loved ones lost.
Dark Light is an evocation of the healing power of light; it documents the healing process by tracing its evolution written across the face of the everyday."
Andrea Rosenthal’s photographs have been exhibited in solo and featured shows at the Davis Orton Gallery; Griffin Museum of Photography (reviewed/ illustrated in Boston Globe); Newbury College Gallery; Brookline Arts Center (Brookline, MA); Gallery of Village Arts (Bellingham, WA); and Calumet Photographic (Cambridge, MA).
Her work has appeared in numerous juried exhibitions, most recently, 2018 Members Prize Show, Cambridge Art Association; “Off the Wall,” Danforth Museum, 2015 and 2014; Cambridge Art Association’s “Fourteenth National Prize Show, 2015” and “Twelfth National Prize Show,” 2013; Illuminations, Massachusetts General Hospital, 2015; “Photography Now” at the South Shore Art Center, 2012; the 2012 National Exhibition at the Griffin Museum; and “Photobook 2011” at the Davis-Orton Gallery (Hudson, NY), and the Lafayette City Center Gallery (Boston, MA
As well as being Cambridge Art Association’s Photographer of the Week in March 2015, awards and honors include a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council; Award of Merit, “Media Mix -- National Juried Exhibition,” South Shore Art Center (Cohasset, MA); and Honorable Mentions, International Photography Awards (Lucies), 2005 and 2004. Rosenthal was recently a Visiting Research Associate at the Women’s Studies Research Center of Brandeis University.

DISAPPOINTMENT by Angie Rucker
Angie Rucker says of her series, 'Heroes', "Using my camera and only natural light, I create constructed scene novellas told in still photographs, utilizing myself or a model engaged with heavily symbolic objects.
As a conceptual photographer, I am motivated by themes of femininity, personal turmoil, relationships, and the complexity of the human spirit. Drawing inspiration from my own life experiences as well as those around me, I attempt to infuse my work with anguish that clings to strength.
I seek the fulfillment that comes from exploring and photographing human emotion and turning that into something physical. My narrative portraits often represent and fictionalize personal situations with the domestic landscape serving as a backdrop, using painterly aesthetics along themes of intimacy, relationships and loss. I examine human nature and its difficulties within the world we live in; anxieties, dreads, anguishes, and everything which forms us as the human beings we are.
These 3 photos are from my series “Heroes” - a collection of eight self-portrait photographs drawn from my curiosity and respect for human endurance - the capacity to bear unimaginable hardship and emerge whole, void, or not at all. How and why the people that experience these hardships give up, emerge to be able to enjoy life again, or merely continue to exist, unable to step to either side. I am interested in the journey of the soul under unbearable weight, and why it ends where it does.
In this work, I have experimented with various objects such as volcanic ash, bones, clay, plants, coyote skulls, and porcupine needles, as metaphors to tell a visual narrative in hopes that the viewer lingers awhile, questioning the meaning of the elements and why they are placed in the manner they appear. By merging the reality of despair with the surreal realm of fantasy, these photographs are depictions of the longing to awake and find it all a dream."
Angie Rucker is a constructed image, conceptual photographer living in Westerville, Ohio. She received her BA from Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts and has participated in juried and group exhibitions at all across the United States.
Rucker’s series of narrative portraits often represent and fictionalize personal situations based on her own experiences as well as those around her.

FLOWERS FOR HELEN by Ann Marie Donahue
Ann Marie Donahue says, "I have had the unfortunate yet inevitable experience of having both of my parents pass away.
Their passing happened in a shorter amount of time (2.5 years within each other). Our Mom passed away suddenly in January of this year and our Dad in June 2015. Before 2015, I had only been to a couple funerals which took place many years before.
During both recent funeral internments, I became really drawn to the final placing of the flowers on the caskets. This ceremony and gesture is a sign of hope and respect.
I began to realize that I found comfort in photographing the funerals and specifically this final goodbye to beloved ones. This series, which I call, The Last Goodbye captures this sweet tradition. I photograph these moments as a documentation of the process and it is part of my mourning. Photography provides a conversation about memory which enables me, during these life moments, to embrace and discuss loss."
Ann Marie is an award-winning photographer living in Los Angeles. She has been photographing for several years and studied at the Maine Media Workshops. She hails from Glenside, PA and has lived in France, Maine, and California.
Her work has been exhibited widely and is in private collections across the country and can be viewed here: www.annmariedonahue.com.
She works in both film and digital photography. Besides photography, she loves to tap dance, walk along Ventura Boulevard, and make people laugh on occasion.

Ashley Elizabeth Craig says, "Growing up in the south creates a different type of woman.
We are taught to be southern gentile ladies, the backbone of our families, strong and independent women, and teachers as well as students of life.
We take the time to sit on the porch, play on swings, embrace our inner child and that no matter what you're never too old for a haircut from mom. And most important when life gives you lemons, add some sugar and a little bit of dad's 'shine and white knuckle it."
Ashley Elizabeth Craig is an artist and educator living in South Carolina. She received a BMA in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina and an MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia.
She has taught at the Savannah College of Art and Design, the University of South Carolina, Miami International University of Art and Design (MIUAD), Barry University and Maine Media Workshops + College.
In late 2012 Ashley, along with two colleagues started a not for profit organization, named Ticka-Arts. Ticka-Arts uncovers hidden talent within the photography community and showcases their work on their website as well as physical exhibitions at rotating locations in the US and the Caribbean.
Ashley is active in the fine art community, exhibiting nationally in Massachusetts, Florida, Oregon, South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, and California.
She participates in portfolio reviewing events and both attending and giving artist lectures and guest critiques. Ashley also works curating both graduate and undergraduate exhibitions with Universities and Colleges. She has been an active member in SPE since 2004 working with different committees and caucuses.

JUST PLAIN HUNGRY by Barbara Hayden

Barbara Hayden says, "My first mentor was my father, a professional photographer, WWII US Army trained. His studios and darkrooms were my playgrounds and classrooms for lots of photo magic. The School of Visual Arts (NYC 1968-1971) provided my formal education.
I am a Street-Shooting-Purist because my images are not posed nor studio lit.
I aim to catch the quick glimpse of ordinary moments barely noticed.
Having been widowed twice, at 25 and 34 years old, my passion and involvement with photography abruptly halted while my healing and regrouping led me into the Deaf Community and a 30-year career in the field of education.
When technology made photography possible without a darkroom, I was focused and ready to reconnect. I bought a quality printer, editing software, and a DSLR (now OMD mirror-less).
I especially enjoy the crowds at the Rose Bowl Swap Meet and Grand Central Market in Los Angeles and anywhere in Manhattan."

Barbara Peacock says of her series, 'Exit Seeker', " The images are of my Mother as she was in her last stages of Alzheimer's.
All of these images were made on my iphone - as it was the easiest way to photograph her since my family did like me photographing her decline.
My Mom passed in August 2017 at the age of 97.
I am an assignment photographer living in Portland, Maine. I studied fine arts at Boston University School of Fine Arts, and photography and filmmaking at The School for the Museum of Fine Arts / Tufts University.
I started as a street photographer and gradually became an assignment lifestyle photographer.
My commercial clients include Arm & Hammer, French's, Disney, Stride Rite, Brookstone. Editorial clients include People, Newsweek, Real Simple, Family Circle, Oprah, Family Fun. My images have been licensed by Toyota, Coca-Cola, Kodak, Wells Fargo, Tylenol, Volkswagen etc.
I had the privilege to study with Master Photographers Mary Ellen Mark, Eugene Richards and Ernesto Bazan traveling to Cuba, Mexico, Cambodia and Sicily. This work can be seen in my 'Of Mice and Men' gallery on my website In 2016.
I published Hometown –1982-2015 - A thirty-year photographic project of the small town where I grew up and continued to live as an adult. Published by BazanPhotos Publishing, Brooklyn NY. Printed in the USA by Puritan Capital.
My current project, American Bedroom- reflections on the nature of life is a cultural and anthropological study of Americans in their private dwelling; their bedrooms. It will encompass the entire United States. It was the recent recipient of the Getty Editorial Grant 2017.
I founded a non-profit organization ‘The Nightingale Project’ that teaches art and photography to needy children. We travel with a mix of adults and high school students. Our journeys have taken us to Haiti, Cambodia and New York."

GLIMPSE by Benjamin Davis
Benjamin Davis says, "The images are a selection from a series made in the months following the death of a close friend.
The photographs are all 35 mm film, left to sit for 3 months in order to remove any personal attachment to them.
After the film was processed, the book created from the images is my reaction to reuniting with old friends and spending time together while in the process of grieving a loved one."
Ben Davis recently graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) after earning a BFA in Fine Art Photography and a BS in Photographic and Imaging Technologies.
He is a visual artist working in the medium of photography. His current focuses are still life images, whether they are found or constructed. He is also interested in work exploring the modern urban environment.
In order to bring a physicality to the photographs, Ben enjoys creating hand-bound books.
He has exhibited work in group shows in places that range from Colorado to Rome. He has also been in a wide array of shows with websites such as Humble Arts Foundation, Light Leaked, and Oranbeg Press.
Recently, Ben finished a residency at the Con Artist Collecting in New York City, and is an upcoming resident at the Arteles Foundation in Finland for September 2018. He is currently based in The Greater NYC Area.

ACT 1, YEAR TWO, NOVEMBER by Ben Altman
Ben Altman says of his series, 'THE MORE THAT IS TAKEN AWAY', "
You must praise the mutilated world -- Adam Zagajewski-The work is a meditation on genocide, and what it means to inherit such histories, using an excavation and performances behind my home.
.
Survivors of mass violence continue to be challenged by the past, as do their families, descendants, and fellow group members, even as the events recede.
Meanwhile people without direct connections live in a world that has been fundamentally shaped by these extraordinary episodes. I straddle that divide; I intend this work to push against our loss of humanity in and from these histories; to mourn and bear witness to the burden while also bringing the past to inform our contemporary situation.
The piece divides into three Acts, with cycles of decay and repair weaving through them, over a period of seven years.
In Act 1, I mark out a 60' x 10' rectangle and excavate linear volumes within it. I work alone, with hand tools only.
The shapes evolve by subtraction; the result in the fourth year is an empty pit, a mound, and a roughly-built watchtower. I lose weight and wear the same clothes throughout, patching as needed.
For Act 2, I shave off my long hair. At twenty stations along the length of the site I video myself undressing and photograph myself lying in the pit. The earthwork is allowed to decay.
In Act 3, the resulting photographs, printed life-size on cotton fabric, are exhibited as part of a gallery installation, then returned the earthwork. After re-photography the pit is filled, burying the prints. Filling will be completed in 2018 and the site will be landscaped with grass and flowers.
The traces of these actions are a portfolio of B&W images, made with an 8x10 camera, and video documentation of the entire process. The photographs can stand alone, be shown as an installation with multiple video channels and projections, or be combined with video clips into a single-channel piece."
Ben Altman (b. 1953) trained as an artist by studying Physics, towing icebergs, racing sailboats, and working in commercial photography.
A naturalized U.S. citizen of British origin, his work explores intersections of history, politics, home, and the contemporary world.
He works with photographs, installation, video, performance, participation and the resourcefulness learned from a richly varied life. Altman’s work reflects the betweenness of growing up in Britain with a Jewish father and an Anglican mother followed, in his late twenties, by emigration to the United States.
Ben Altman's work has been shown in galleries, museums, and festivals across the United States and in the UK, Poland, and China.
His projects were selected for the Houston Center for Photography’s 2015 Fellowship, the 2015 Critical Mass Top 50, and for other awards and grants. He has exhibited recently as solo or featured artist at the Pingyao International Photography Festival, China; Cambridge University, U.K.; Light Work in Syracuse, NY; the Kopeikin Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; the Dowd Gallery, State University of New York at Cortland; the Handwerker Gallery at Ithaca College, NY; and the Sol Mednick Gallery, University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA.
