EXHIBITION #2
NIGHT & THE CITY #3 by Debra Achen

(Click on image for larger view)
The energy of the city at night…
a disparate interplay…
of darkness and light…
Mystery and Intrigue follow shadowy figures…
passing through iridescent rays, reflections…
into inky obscurities.
Debra Achen says, '"Night & the City" is one of my "Speed of Light” portfolios exploring the relationship between matter, space, light, and time. The low light and movement of subjects through the dark allows them to blur into their surrounding space. The camera movement adds a further impressionistic dimension while the shadowy forms and soft light create a sense of mystery.
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, my passion for art began at a very young age. I majored in Art Education at Edinboro State University before completing my BA in Visual Arts and Communications at the University of California, San Diego. Originally trained in traditional darkroom techniques, my photographic creative practice has shifted more to digital processing and printing. I now live on the scenic Monterey Peninsula, an environment that provides endless inspiration for my work.
As a photographer, I am attracted to the underlying structure of things, and to the way the forces of nature – Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Gravity, Light, and Time - imprint the material world with their magic. Some of my images border on the abstract. By extracting, isolating, or separating out" a certain element of a photographic subject, it becomes simplified to a more basic, fundamental form.
Other work examines the relationship between objects, space, time, and light. Slow-capture images blur the borders between objects and the space that surrounds them. Movement of the subject or the camera adds the element of time, creating a more impressionistic interpretation of the subject."

Frank Lynch grew up in Dublin, Ireland where he studied graphic design. After spending several years living in Germany and Israel he has now settled in Brig, Switzerland.
Frank has always been interested in photography but only really became passionate in the art when he started shooting black and white and developing photos in his own darkroom.
Frank enjoys travelling off the beaten track and taking photographs of the people he meets along the way, finding the interaction that takes place between photographer and subject a rewarding and uplifting experience. The camera helps to break down the barriers between people who are, in effect, complete strangers . . .

(Click on image for larger view)
Giuseppe Cardoni says, "Photography helps me to live the different dimensions of reality in balance between life that flowing (time) and abstraction (thought).
I am interested in making photographs with a strong personal connotation to synthesize some of the possible faces of reality correlating myself to these moments."
Giuseppe Cardoni lives in Umbria - Italy, is an engineer, he prefers B/W reportage. He has been part of the Italian Leica Photographic Group where he had the opportunity to attend Masters of Italian photography such as with Gianni Berengo Gardin, Piergiorgio Branzi, Mario Lasalandra. He is author or co-author of various books.
He has dedicated himself for some years to the photography of musical events. The photos sent are part of this activity. In the next few weeks the new book “Jazz Notes” will be released which represents the synthesis of more than 10 years of music photography, a personal intimate point of view on jazz atmospheres.
He has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Award-winner or finalist in many national and international competitions.

Heather Barnes says, "I am drawn to shapes, lines and textures made by light and shadow, and the stories they tell. Although I’ve always had a camera in hand documenting family, I didn’t really start to see and make art until about three years ago. I prefer to shoot in black and white, except for sunrises and sunsets, or when the light decides for me that it should be in color."

NUDE 2 by Isabelle de Blois
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Isabelle de Blois says, "Through my lens, I always try to look at the world with some abstract perspective so the subject is seen for its inner beauty.
In this series of nudes, my goal is to express the charm and glamour of men and women beyond object of sexual desire. The distance with the subject and the use of a screen, in an attempt of discretion maybe, magnifies highlights, lines and, of course, several tonal levels of shadows.
For those nudes, I didn’t want to be disturbed by the face and specific identity nor any references to places or social context. I wish these nudes are any women’s/men’s body or any women’s/men’s sensuality."
Isabelle de Blois began her career with studies in visual arts and professional photography, a profession she held for a few years. Then, in the mid-1980s, while working as a photographer, she turned to the world of cinema, especially social documentary films.
From 1986 to 2007, she signed the production of more than twenty documentaries, short and feature films, and collaborated very closely in research and scriptwriting, she did some of the images and edited several of these films ; on agriculture and environmental issues, on regional communities, on artists and "extraordinary" characters, among others.
During this period, she directed three independent short films, thanks to artists' scholarships. From 2008 to 2011, she joined VIDEO FEMMES, an artist center, mainly as executive producer, director and director of photography.
She collaborates in the production of numerous "film-tools" for social and community organizations. She will also be a trainer and coach for young female directors. Since 2011, she has devoted herself mainly to directing and editing, besides directing photography on her own films and on several documentaries by other directors.
Her passion for photography has never left her and lately, she returned to it more intensively; through various themes such as portraiture and nature and exploring alternative printing processes. Recently, she has started workshops with teenagers from a youth center, where photography is a social tool for speaking out.

TRACING MEMORY 01 by Jackie Jack

(Click on image for larger view)
Jackie Jack says, '"Tracing Memory" is a series that narrates the story of my past and present.
The photos transformed into a portal that brings back my childhood memories and to investigate how it influenced me as to who am I now.
Memories transformed into symbols and repeatedly appeared in the photos subconsciously and they are the connections between memories, identities, fears, tensions, and solitary through places, people and objects I have seen through the lens.
"Tracing Memory" is a documentary of my daily life and surroundings, it is also a fiction that subtlety represents how I felt about the past and present. By arranging the sequence of photos, I found connections in between and it created a story."
Jackie is a graphic designer and a fine artist originally from Hong Kong and now lives in New York, he majored in Fine Art and earned a BFA degree from School of Visual Art, New York.
As an immigrant, the political changes in his hometown (Hong Kong) makes him feels that the concept of home became more abstract. Jackie’s works primarily are themes of exploring the meaning of home and identity. In his work, he approaches the world around him as if he is an investigator studying the details of a crime scene in order to get a full picture of the event.
He traces the details around him to get the picture of the world that he lives in and focuses on the moments that resonate his memories and uses them as a visual narrative to create a story based on his feeling of the present moment. Although they might not be Kodak moment materials, they are fragments that signify a moment of truth, an element that adds on to his existence.

NIGHT LIGHTS NO 36 by James Ritchie

SECOND PLACE
(Click on image for larger view)
James Ritchie says, "Night Lights explores what lurks in the shadows of the haunting and mysterious half-light of dusk and night. With the harsh and distracting light of day extinguished, unexpected beauty is revealed in the dim, mundane, silent and serene solitude of night.
These images present a sensation of unfamiliarity within familiar situations that, combined with subtle details of odd, mundane, or sometimes humoristic elements or juxtapositions, break the passivity of spectators and invites them to participate in the art by developing their own interpretations."
James Ritchie has always had an interest in art and photography, but it wasn't until after he retired that he was able to devote himself to serious artistic endeavors. During the two decades since, he has taken an autodidactic path from snapshooting to fine art photography. His award-winning work, which is exhibited regionally and nationally, is enjoyed by an international audience and owned in a growing number of private, corporate, and commercial collections.

ALCATRAZ by Judi Iranyi

(Click on image for larger view)
Judi Iranyi says, "My interest in photography started when I was a child. My father was always photographing us and sending the images to family members that lived far away.
After my son was born, I started to photograph him and share the images with my community and family, just as my father had.I had formal training in photography in the 1970s, however, I did not pursue photography at that time as a profession, though I certainly exposed a lot of film in those decades.
Instead I worked as a clinical social worker until my retirement 5 years ago. After retirement is when I returned to my passion and not only started photographing more, but I also began to exhibit my work in exhibitions.Photography for me is an act of distilling reality into my personal vision. A photograph becomes a way of communicating information about other people, places and cultures. Most of my work has been peoples portraits and travel photography.
Recently I have become interested in experimenting with digital composites combining analogue and digital media.
The images I submitted reflect my interest in how light and shadows create visual patterns and mood."
Judi Iranyi was born in Hungary at the close of World War II. Later she emigrated to Venezuela, she also lived in Trinidad, Barbados, and West Germany before moving to San Francisco in 1971.
Ms. Iranyi became interested in photography in the sixties. She studied photography and art at City College of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, U.C. Berkeley, and Museum Studies at John F. Kennedy University. However, she worked as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker until her retirement.
Since her retirement in 2013, Ms Iranyi has dedicated her time to photography. Her book “Bay Area families” was one of the 10 jury selection choices at Camerawork, San Francisco.
She has been published and has been in numerous group shows both in the United States and Europe.
She recently had a solo show in Hungary of her “Roma in Kiskoros” project documenting the life of a Roma community in a small town.
She has self-published 2 Monographs “Arg-e-Bam” about the ancient citadel in Iran and “Remembering Michael” a tribute to her son who died of AIDS in 1984.
Three of her life passions are traveling, literature, and photography. Traveling and literature have broadened her view of the world.

ANGELS IN THE ARCHITECTURE by Kathryn Dunlevie
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Kathryn Dunlevie says of her series, 'More Than Meets the Eye', "Inspired by a space, I photograph it segment by segment from various vantage points. Next, I arrange and rearrange the images until a coherent composition emerges.
The result—a photographic equivalent of a Cubist collage—is uneven, with visual jumps occurring wherever the edges of two photos meet. Finally, I paint, blurring the borders between photos and smoothing the abrupt shifts in perspective.
This knitting together of the disjunctive parts seems to coax the space into giving up its secrets. It is as if a plateau's sunken river bed were to unfold and rise up into the viewer's line of sight, or as if a "mirror-on-a-stick" spy-toy allowed a look straight ahead to reveal details from outside the viewer's visual scan.
The interweaving of various perspectives creates a space with twists and ripples, revealing unexpected nooks and crannies and peeks around corners. The initial photo-collage is transformed, through the act of painting, into a pictorial space where weird transitions and subtle spatial anomalies emerge.
The depiction of this new space is not just a record of what we see while moving in space over time, but includes elements that have appeared as if from beyond the customary four dimensions. Amidst the reorganization of the various perspectives, the viewer catches sight of details not visible in the original space: details suggestive of the extra dimensions posited in contemporary theoretical physics.
This new pictorial space is not just a composite of things we see as we move through space and time. It also offers glimpses of what may actually exist around us that we do not see."
Kathryn Dunlevie is a photography-based artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and internationally. Cathy Kimball, Executive Director of the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, writes of Dunlevie’s work:
"Through brilliant compositional detail and manipulation, she creates disconcerting, surprising, inexplicable spaces and scenarios – swimming pools that have many points of entry, cloisters with multiple arched domes, streetscapes that elude mapmakers, and interior settings that are almost, but not quite, right."
Born on the east coast, Dunlevie lived in six different states by the time she was 12, and in Paraguay when she was 16. She has a B.A. in fine arts from Rice University, and studied art history and film at the University of Paris, painting at California College of the Arts, and photography in Madrid. She lives in Palo Alto.
Dunlevie has received numerous awards and fellowships, including two Arts Council Silicon Valley Artist Laureate Fellowships. Her work has been exhibited at FotoFest International since 2002, at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, at Studio Thomas Kellner in Germany, in the US Art in Embassies Program in Moscow and in Saatchi Arts’ Best of 2014.
Her work has been reviewed in Spain’s La Fotografia Actual, Korea’s photo + and Germany’s Profifoto, as well as in The New York Times, Camerawork: A Journal of Photographic Arts, Photo Metro, Artweek, and Artlies.

Kevin Lyle says, "As long as I can remember, I've been curious about incidental objects and environments and their potential for a sort of extraordinary/ordinary beauty.
I find this quality in the work of photographer Eugene Atget, composer Erik Satie and singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie. These great artists are a constant source of inspiration. My process is fuled by an innate hunter/gatherer impulse.
Most of my images are collected within walking distance of my home on Chicago's
north side. Contemplative wandering in the urban analog world, away from the preponderance of drama delivered digitally via television and the Internet, reveals evidence of real life- evidence of what may be may have happened or may yet occur.
Sometimes mundane, sometims oblique, askew or atypical. Mostly overlooked, until documented."

Larry Chait says, "I work largely intuitively; my ideas for images come to me when I least expect them, determined by where I happen to find myself, what my mood is, and what thoughts happen to be floating in and out of my head. Most of them I forget straight away. It usually takes me a long time to appreciate my own work and its meaning. But I'm beginning to believe that it all has something to do with imposing order onto a chaotic world."
Larry Chait grew up in Iowa and Kansas. Despite a strong childhood interest in art, he decided to pursue a career as a research scientist.
Throughout college and graduate school, he continued to draw and paint in his spare time. With the advent of digital photography in the late ‘90’s, Larry’s interest in photography was renewed, and since 2002 he has devoted himself full-time to developing his photographic vision.
In 2003 he earned a Certificate in Digital Photography from Columbia College, Chicago. His work is held in numerous public and private collections and has been exhibited throughout the U.S and internationally.

Liza Botkin says, "I was born and raised in New York City, but my photographic career began in Los Angeles in the 70s while I was working for photographers Michael Childers and Lou Stoumen, from whom I learned how to print.
I consider myself a street photographer, shooting from the hip, taking my camera with me wherever I go. I wander the streets of Los Angeles, spending much of my time in malls where, for many years, I’ve been documenting the preoccupation many people have with shopping.
Though I’ve never studied the art of photography in an academic setting, my work is deeply influenced and defined by that of Henri Cartier-Bresson. I, too, search for what he so aptly called “the decisive moment.”

"This decomposing log was dotted with insect boring holes and beginning to show signs of algae and fungal colonization. After several years of weathering through hard winters and harsh summers, a fissure formed in the wood. I wanted to capture the depth of the thin fissure, while finding the shadowed grooves left behind by cutting tools in shallow relief. The shadow of a lilac tree crosses the image, a tree which is fed by the decomposition of the logs."

BEST SERIES
(Click on image for larger view)
Marna Bell says, ""Closer to Home" is a collection of photographs taken between 1970 and the present, in Coney Island. The series focuses on a feeling of nostalgia--longing for an idealized time when life seemed simpler.
Childhood amnesia left me with vague, disjointed memories of my youth. In the 1970s, I started taking photographs of Coney Island as a way to recapture those lost memories. In the reclaimed visions, everything seemed perfect. These images represent semi-fictionalized narratives; some dimly recalled memories and some imagined. In this fantasy world of the past, I found excitement and escape, just as it was when I was riding on the merry-go-round with my father."
Marna Bell was born in Brooklyn, New York. She received a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA from Syracuse University in painting. Bell has exhibited nationally in museums, galleries and colleges.
She has been published in Black and White magazine; exhibited in group shows at Munson Williams Proctor Arts Inst., Utica, NY, Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, Auburn, NY, and The Southeast Center for Photography, Greenville, SC. Her book “Hudson Past/Perfect” is in the artist book section of the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City.

A BOY AND HIS DOG by Michael August
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Michael August says, "There is a quality in the most basic surroundings of an industrial society that is worth registering, despite or precisely because of its mundanity. Whether an array of lampposts, the surfaces we walk and work on, the facades of neighborhood, school, or commercial buildings, the ordinary possesses the capacity to transcend itself. I want to see, and others to know, that the setting we all share is more than it seems, especially in those places and times when it appears to be much less than what it should."
Michael August is a photographer concerned with the ordinary -locations, objects, experiences- and its capacity to be both common and unique. He grew up in Virginia Beach, VA, and spent formative years in self-guided study, as he read, wrote, and traveled.
Recently a BFA graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, August will go on to the MFA Photography and Film program at Virginia Commonwealth University. August was part of the New Waves 2016 exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, two of the Annual Juried Photography Exhibitions at Suffolk Art Gallery, as well as two Juried Student Exhibitions at ODU. While at ODU, he has also twice been the recipient of the Lorraine and Dr. H. William Fink Art Scholarship.

4 CORNERS OF THE HEART by Mo Verlaan
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Mo Verlaan says, "For a split second, light illuminates the brilliance of the ordinary existence of things; it exalts and then vanishes within an instant.
My fascination with light and luminance finds its expression in all my photographs. To me light is both a tangible and evanescent medium, if not a language.
By fading, shading, molding and carving the light and the darkness in my photographs, I try to transform reality and move into an imaginative and intuitive realm. My process involves composing layered images that nearly look like drawings or paintings, scraping off the innate realism that is part of photography.
The photograph 4 Corners of the Heart is part of the series The Memory of Time about the plasticity of time and light, to see time and light as something elastic, that can be molded into something palpable. For me there is a strong correlation between the impermanence of light and the fluidity of time. I explore and create abstract spaces that cannot be deciphered immediately.
The photographs Hand of Flozif and Dark side of Etienne are part of the project MaleFemale which started already in 2013 as a photographic study about the thin line that divides male from female. Or rather connects it. How can some people appear very feminine and at the same time have a strong male presence or the other way around.
I wanted to capture that moment of duality. For my research it worked best to start exactly in the middle with transgender models and especially models who call themselves genderqueer. As one of the models said: I travel between male/female and others, I feel more like a kind of androgyne or an X-gender.
To me it seemed their male and female energies complimented each other creating a unique and powerful balance. I find this fluidity of gender energies moving inside and out of a person very interesting. Through the years I have met many beautiful people in Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin and Rome and they gave me their trust to photograph them."
After graduating from the Rietveld Art Academy, Mo Verlaan (1963) started out in experimental theatre, creating sets on location as well as performing. Her love for travelling and cooking made Mo found the company De Drie Gezusters catering to (inter)national filmcrews from a converted truck.
A growing passion for photography made her enter the Photo Academy. She graduated in 2016 with a joint exhibition and her first book Resonance was launched, in which she explored the impermanence of light, the brief and fleeting beauty of landscapes, architecture and people.
She studied after the Photo Academy for a year at Atelier Smedsby in Paris and attended masterclasses in analog photography with Anders Petersen and Machiel Botman.
She was Finalist at the Hariban Award and Winner single image at the 9th JM Cameron Award in 2016. She was awarded with several Honorable Mentions in the past years (IPA 2017&2018, TIPA, Monovision, FAPA, 11th & 13th JMCA).
Mo Verlaan participated in exhibitions in The Netherlands and abroad, her work has been shown in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Den Helder, Groningen, London, Berlin, Athens, Arles, Barcelona, Budapest, Los Angeles, Hudson NY and Hyderabad.
Her work was published in the All About Photo Magazine #1 Light, USA and in the NEW 2017, 100 New Dutch Photography Talents, by GUP.

Nicholas J.J. Smith says, "One way of combining intellectual and sensuous satisfaction is by reading science while eating chocolate ... but in viewing some art works -- especially certain paintings, photographs and films -- I find a different kind of combination of intellectual and sensory content: both elements are palpably present but inextricably intertwined; each supports and infuses the other so that one cannot separate out a purely cognitive part and a purely experiential part. That's the kind of combination I aim for in my photography."
Nicholas J.J. Smith is a photographer, musician and philosopher based in Sydney, Australia.

LOTUS NO 1 by Paul Jett

Paul Jett says, "My past experience with black-and-white film photography and my study of the art and culture of East Asia, particularly ink brush painting, are the sources for my style of work.
Chinese ink paintings – with their simple depictions of ordinary things like a branch of a tree or a stalk of bamboo, but which convey deeper meanings than their subjects suggest – have inspired me to emulate their aesthetic in my photographs.
I shoot my subjects as silhouettes against the sky or water and render the images in black and white. My challenge to myself is to find that “unknown” quality in ordinary things, photographically capture it, and in so doing encourage greater reflection on and awareness of our everyday surroundings.
British sculptor Antony Gormley has written that: “Sculpture can be a catalyst for first-hand experience.” I want my photographs to work in a similar way and be a catalyst that moves people to be more aware of the natural world in their everyday surroundings and to experience its inherent beauty and interest.
I received a B. A. degree in Art and Philosophy from the University of New Mexico – with coursework in photography, Chinese brush painting, and the philosophy, history, art and language of East Asia – and an M. A. degree in Art Conservation from Queen’s University in Canada.
Subsequently, I worked as a conservator for the Smithsonian Institution’s museums of Asian art, and in that role I frequently traveled to East and Southeast Asia; at the same time I continued with my pursuit of photography.
My education and experiences led me to a style that combines photographic methods with my sense of the aesthetic of East Asian ink paintings in order to create simple, black-and-white or mutely colored images.
My aim is to see and photographically capture the inherent beauty and interest in nature that is present in our everyday surroundings. My work has been in various group exhibits in the Washington, D.C. area and nationally; I am represented by Susan Calloway Fine Arts, Washington, D.C. and also currently show at {9} The Gallery, Phoenix, Arizona."
