MASKS AND MIRRORS BLACK DISTANCE by Jerry Allison
(Click on image for larger view)

Social Distancing, Self-Isolation, Protective Gear - Masks, Caps, Gloves - Such are the realities of our day to day life at the moment.

Turn this around. There is more than  enough gravitas and grimness making the rounds already. Mask becomes masque and I attend a masqued ball for a party of one, observed and captured in a variety of costumes and mirrors.

Jerry Allison says  "I received a Master's Degree in Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1984) with a focus on Painting.

I studied with various members of the Hairy
Who and Chicago Imagists. These included Roger Brown, Karl Wirsum and Christina Ramberg. I have exhibited my work in New York, Chicago, New Haven, Denver, Minneapolis and Los Angeles.

PPE by Jo Ann Chaus
HONORABLE MENTION

Jo Ann Chaus says, "The work is a series of self-portraits in which I drape my body in remnants from my past, and of other women I'd known or could have known, and summon up reflective, psychological moments from their lives as I imagine them, mid century, the decade of my birth.  In creating these personas I'm performing as, I'm building a bridge between them and me, then and now, attempting to understand them, and thus myself, and the influences that formed my early sense of identity, where image was a creation of how to present yourself to the world."

Jo Ann Chaus (b. 1954) is an American photographer from and based in the New York metro area.  She holds two certificates from the International Center of Photography in New York City.

In 2016 Jo Ann self-published “Sweetie & Hansom”, a 60-image book with original text exploring family, relationships and loss.

Her current body of work, “Conversations with Myself”, is a collection of performative self-portraiture that explores concepts of women’s roles and identity, currently under edit for publishing.  Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and she holds special recognitions and awards.

Career Highlights:

Critical Mass 200, 2020, 2019, 15th Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers Winner Self Portrait Series, 14th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards Honorable Mention, Winner  13th Pollux Awards non-professional category, Klompching Fresh 2019 Finalist, PDN Emerging Photographer Fall 2019 Winner, , Candela Unbound8! and 9! juried exhibitions, Permanent Collection in the Center for Creative Photography Qualities of Light Exhibition, Juror’s Choice South East Center for Photography Portrait Exhibition 2019.

COMPANION by Karen Olson

Karen Olson says of her series, 'Wildheart', "Just as the pandemic was making its way across the country to the East coast, early spring arrived in Maine.

Still grieving the loss of my husband,  I was seeking refuge and companionship. In a climate of global pain, I was hoping to find a way to heal. Having read of the benefits of forest bathing (or immersion), I entered the forest with child-like curiosity and hope. I felt it once before, there was something there, I could sense it. It was mystery, it was fragrance, it was atmosphere; something beyond the obvious. At every turn I stopped to breathe deeply and fully take in the scene, noticing textures and details, listening to the music of insects and birds.

This multi-sensory encounter reached in and altered my thought patterns. The way I saw and experienced the world was changing, but how? I later discovered the science behind the forest atmosphere, especially in places that have been untouched for centuries. Here there is a gift. And we only have to breathe it in to benefit. I became fully a part of this.

Reaching out in return, my fingers slowly examined mosses, lichens, and bark, an important exercise in a world where touch has been censored. The forest transformed and healed me physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It has become my intimate companion and my guide."

As an artist working in photography, Karen Olson illustrates the language of the subconscious mind and uses the medium to dig deep into the psyche. Karen uses photography to represent internal realities…human emotion with all its intensity and complexity. She employs digitally captured sculptural elements and works in paint, intertwining them with conceptual portraits to express layers of emotional experience and the places in between.

Karen was born in Connecticut but has called Midcoast Maine her home for the past 30 years. She has studied art and photography locally at Maine Media and with well-known visiting artists. Her work has been shown in galleries in Maine and the US and has been featured in several publications.

AVOYELLES by Kathryn Dunlevie
(Click on image for larger view)

Kathryn Dunlevie says, "My ongoing series 'Mistick Krewes' is an homage to New Orleans, with its overlapping heritages and the still palpable aura of its tempestuous history.

Since its founding in 1718, New Orleans’ cultural, political and natural landscapes have been continually invaded and eroded, bought and sold, enriched and transformed.

I am combining my photographs with images from disparate sources, adding layer upon layer and revisiting each composition again and again. Since the beginning of quarantine I have been working toward scenarios that call to mind environmental and social challenges we now face, as well as hope for a better future."

Kathryn Dunlevie is a photography-based artist whose work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and internationally. Cathy Kimball, former Executive Director of the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, writes of Dunlevie’s work:

"Through brilliant compositional detail and manipulation, she creates disconcerting, surprising, inexplicable spaces and scenarios – streetscapes that elude mapmakers, and interior settings that are almost, but not quite, right."

Born on the east coast, Dunlevie lived in six different states by the time she was 12, and in Paraguay when she was 16. She has a B.A. in fine arts from Rice University, and studied art history and film at the University of Paris, painting at California College of the Arts, and photography in Madrid. She lives in Palo Alto.

Dunlevie has received numerous awards and fellowships, including two Arts Council Silicon Valley Artist Laureate Fellowships. Her work has been exhibited at FotoFest International since 2002, at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China, at Studio Thomas Kellner in Germany, in the US Art in Embassies Program in Moscow and in Saatchi Arts’ Best of 2014. Her work has been reviewed in Spain’s La Fotografia Actual, Korea’s photo + and  Germany’s Profifoto, as well as in The New York Times, Camerawork: A Journal of Photographic Arts, Photo Metro, Artweek, and Artlies.

Highlights of Career:

Eight solo exhibitions at FotoFest International (Houston) (2002 - 2020)

Included in China's PingYao International Photography Festival (2017)

Included in Saatchi Art's "BEST of 2014"

HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)

Larry Chait says, "I work largely intuitively; my ideas for images come to me when I least expect them, determined by where I happen to find myself, what my mood is, and what thoughts happen to be floating in and out of my head. Most of them I forget straight away. It usually takes me a long time to appreciate my own work and its meaning. But I'm beginning to believe that it all has something to do with imposing order onto a chaotic world.

I am a Chicago photo-based artist who has been actively working since 2002. I studied at the MCA and Columbia College. My work has been in the MoCP’s Midwest Photographers Project, The Chicago Project at Edelman Gallery and the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis. I have exhibited widely throughout the country and internationally in 12 solo and more than 80 group exhibitions."

Lisa Paulette Silberman says, "I'm drawn to the organic strength of nature, what is revealed when the sun isn't shining. We look to the visible world to bring us happinessor peace. I explore my own need to uncover and explore what there is to be seen and felt. With that in mind I want my work to reflect my respect and awe for what there can be and what there still is."

CORONA BOTANICS I by Marta Wapiennik
(Click on image for larger view)

Marta Wapiennik says, "Corona Botanics" series was made during the strict lockdown in Poland.

I combined everyday objects (and those connected with COVID-19 pandemic) from my home with garden flowers.

My idea was to use this configuration as a metaphor for coping mechanisms. I mainly based on the positive aspect of emotion-focused coping, which plants stand for in this project. Optimism, humor, gratefulness, and kindness - have become crucial for maintaining good mental health in a world of restraints and restrictions."

Marta Wapiennik was born in Cracow, Poland, in 1988. I graduated from the Graphic Department at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Art in Cracow in 2013 (diploma in screen printing). Her artworks, including photography, paintings, and posters, were exhibited and awarded internationally.

AFLOAT by Maureen Denny
(Click on image for larger view)

Maureen Denny says, "My work is a collection of self-portraits that delves deep into the wonder of imagination.

When faced with a blank canvas and a simple prompt, how does creativity orchestrate the details of an entire world? My work is a journey of both mind and heart while participating in Brooke Shaden's White Wall Wednesday series.

Currently I am inspired to grow and learn and make mistakes.  And then find a way to use what I learn to make my art more impactful. The deeper I get into this journey the further I want to take it. As an introvert I am starting to find my voice through my art.  I would like to help others to find inspiration to embrace wherever they are in life and make the most of it.

I started my photo career just a few years ago while in my late 50's. I had to work through feelings of self-doubt, that I am too old to really make a difference. My art, and the people I have met, have given me so much support and encouragement. I want to show others that it is possible to start something new. At any age.

After moving to an area so different from where I was used to living, I struggled to find beauty in my new environment. Picking up a camera  provided me with a different perspective.  I joined a few workshops, took a short course in fine art photography using a large format vintage camera, bought a new digital camera and off I went. Then I discovered Photoshop and photo manipulation. This art form is only limited by my imagination. "

Image description-

Afloat - Do you know when you are at your peak? When to push yourself just a little further? We all have our breaking point. Where we think we can't endure whatever we are dealing with one more minute, one more time. It's at these times we have to ask ourselves if we can dig a little deeper, or are we going to be able to find happiness stuck in the shallows.

Drifting - Some days I feel I am drifting. Aimlessly. There is a feeling of being lost at sea or in the clouds. It is easier to let the current take me where it wants to. Other days I want to be the navigator! I look to the stars like the sailors used to for centuries. Waiting for the stars to guide my way.

Sunflower Surrealism – This image was created as I explored what surrealism meant with my art. I was influenced by Rene Magritte, my love of sunflowers and a willingness to play. Many have told me what this image represents to them and I love hearing how it is being interpreted. I created this the first day of May, in the middle of what is the most surreal year I have ever experienced.

Maureen Mulhern-White says, "the world of alternative process photography (both frustrating and enchanting) is a deep passion and an ongoing obsession.

In my little darkroom studio I explore the magic of darkroom chemicals, odd little objects, UV light, flights of fancy and fear, and follow my mistakes and see where they will take me.  My current work is a direct response to the global pandemic; I have tried to address our collective isolation and vulnerability when faced with the unknown."

Born in England, Maureen Mulhern-White spent her early years in the UK before moving to the US where she is a naturalized citizen. She has a BA from Sarah Lawrence College, and an MFA from the University of Iowa’s Writers Workshop. Wesleyan University Press published her book of poetry, “Parallax." The disability community is resilient, creative, generous, revolutionary - yet we are repeatedly discarded to be left behind during the pandemic.

I am reclaiming agency through chlorophyll printing the experience of being high-risk during the pandemic.

The action of printing COVID disability representation onto leaves highlights the organic nature of disability, reframing it as a beautiful part of human diversity.

The fact that chlorophyll prints are impermanent, and will continue to decay over time, asks the viewer to confront the interdependence and bodily impermanence we all share."

SKY DIPTYCHS NO 1353 by Naohiro Maeda

Naohiro Maeda says of the series, “Sky Diptychs”, "These diptychs of skyscapes are the study of spotting equanimity in this challenging time.

During the staying home period in 2020, I was more intrigued by the relationship among color, light and space which resonates calmness and lightness inside. I made diptychs while thinking about Japanese folding screens which can create personal space inside rooms."

Naohiro Maeda is an artist from Japan who resides in Salem, MA. He investigates psychological landscapes and collective memories through photographic practices. His works have been exhibited in the United States, United Kingdom and Russia, including the Griffin Museum of Photography and The Curated Fridge, and featured in The Boston Globe. Nika De Carlo says, "I am a survivor of the opioid crisis.

My in-process series, See You In Heaven, started as a self-documentary. My camera first became a tool to examine and reason with myself and my addiction, which grew into a means of comfort, escape, denial, and desperation. While photographing myself, I turned my camera onto another person who was also entrapped in it: my partner.

I chose to photograph ourselves together as an attempt to cope, to better understand the heart of the disease, and most importantly, to realize the power it had on us. Through photographing myself and my partner repetitively, I created a visual diary that traced the shifts of our intimacy and distance, which seemingly paralleled with our relapses and attempts at recovery. As the series grew, I found myself discovering a common theme: a sense of waiting and loss. In the manipulative heart of addiction, love for another is overpowered by this, emptying and refilling oneself with a venomous weight of loss of control.

By creating these photographs, I found myself gaining some of that control back. After years of photographing our shared experiences, I am now continuing the series to also record our shared recovery. Laced with fragments of the past and hope for the future, See You In Heaven is a tender and honest depiction of our relationship with each other, the grip of addiction, and the journey that comes after."

Nika De Carlo is an American photographer currently living in New York City. She received her BFA in Photography from Pratt Institute in 2015, where she also had a concentration in Filmmaking. De Carlo’s work examines relationship dynamics, immunity, emotional transformation, and self-discovery, with an emphasis on self-portraiture and photographing those closest to her.

She is currently working on the completion of her latest series, See You in Heaven, a 5-year long documentation of her relationship with her partner throughout their shared opiate addiction and recovery. Her latest film, Sick in Paradise, is a psychological short inspired by her childhood experiences with mental health issues. It is set to release later this year.
