A HOUSE UNITED by Phillip Mudd

Phillip Mudd says of his series, 'RONA 2020', "Inspired by John Baldessari and Barbra Kruger RONA 2020 combines photography and text to consider the influence of Novel Coronavirus, Covid-19 on our culture and systems.
This pandemic has exposed the faults in our system and proved as reminder the stark differences in reality for people in this country. Some cannot leave the house or socialize in person for fear of a possible and more apparent and horrific death. Others tell themselves that it will never happen to them and hold a pool party at the Lake of the Ozarks, while others have no choice but to risk exposure just to keep their world from falling apart.
We are told to get tested if we want to, but the reality is quite different from such a casual statement. Though this pandemic has proven to be seemingly causal for the rich, famous, and those in positions of power. For the rest of the nation its not that simple, the issues with testing, grocery prices on the rise, increasing unemployment, no universal healthcare, no real social structure to combat any serious threat to our system, impending evictions and a political body at odds. Increasing anxiety for some and denial for others, the new normal is uncertainty. RONA 2020 is my attempt to work through these new circumstances, this surreal prologue at play."
Phillip Mudd is a multi-media artist and photographer from Benton City, WA who has exhibited work throughout the United States and internationally. Phil’s work is informed by the curiosity that is the “everyday.”
He is intrigued by the communities and social systems that encapsulate and influence the individual and culture of a region. Phil investigates the routine relations that are often disregarded. Chiefly project based, his research explores the commonality of life of the individual and collective, and the included and marginalized.
He is currently an Instructor at Washington State University where he works in support of both the Fine Arts and Digital Technology & Culture programs.

Inspired by true crime, Rachel Britton's “Specimens” confronts death to showcase the psyche in quarantine. Rachel Britton is a composite artist based in Grand Rapids, Michigan whose work is inspired by psychedelia, horror, and being queer. Rachel’s pronouns are they/them. HALF MOON BAY UCLELET I by Rachel Nixon
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Rachel Nixon says, "Faced with the abrupt shock of the COVID-19 lockdown, I set about reconsidering my relationship with my home environment and wider surroundings.
All of a sudden I was cut off from the vibrant world I used to be a part of, and perhaps took too much for granted. Now I had an indeterminate void of time stretching in front of me, and there remained only vague, blurry impressions of the world outside.
After a while, I realized that I needed to find joy and optimism in my newly constrained environment, so I began looking for the light at home, and captured moments of serendipity, simplicity and hope even in the most mundane of settings.
The lifting of restrictions offered me the chance to reconnect with the world outside. Immersed once again in nature, standing on a remote shoreline on the west coast of Canada, I felt a need to revel in the most basic elements - the water, the trees, the rocks - that stretched out before me. While the landscape and its features have permanence and substance, I chose to present them in an abstract, fleeting manner as a reminder to myself that the privilege of visiting and being a part of such places could evaporate again at any time."
A Vancouver, Canada-based fine art photographer, Rachel Nixon approaches the everyday with a fresh eye to find beauty and discomfort in the familiar.
Rachel is inspired by the potential of natural forms to offer the foundation for unexpected perspectives, and uses strategies such as abstraction, fragmentation and multiple exposure to bring these to the viewer’s attention. She also develops constructed realities tackling themes such as secrecy, isolation and a desire for connection with the outside world. Her urban exploration and street photography seeks out scenes that others may miss and looks for humour in daily life. Throughout her work runs a deep appreciation for colour and structure.
In 2019, Rachel graduated with honours from the VanArts professional photography program in Vancouver. Her photography is exhibited internationally and has been recognized in a number of awards, including the Julia Margaret Cameron Awards.
Before moving full time into visual art, Rachel had a successful 20-year career as a digital journalist and news executive in the UK, US and Canada for organizations including the BBC, CBC and Microsoft.
A British-Canadian citizen, Rachel holds a first class honours degree from the University of Oxford in Modern Languages and Literature. She loves to travel and is passionate about many forms of art, especially music. Rachel finds inspiration in the urban and natural beauty of the Pacific North West, where she calls home.

JUNE 6 2020 by Ruth Lauer Manenti
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Ruth Lauer Manenti says, "I stepped outside on March 15th into a landscape I knew well and yet not.
I had often walked through it but never in it. I began photographing these woods close to my home. The forest was as beautiful as unsettling; as much about the ground as my groundlessness, as I felt unanchored behind my home.
Thoughts of COVID and how it was affecting people were moving through my mind. First the pandemic seemed far away, then like something my husband could easily come in contact with as a nurse in the Hudson Valley. Our birthdays came, then Mother’s Day, my friend’s son’s graduation, my nephew’s wedding; we celebrated at home going nowhere.
Meanwhile many small businesses have permanently closed; dreams interrupted. A quarter of the country in Bangladesh are trying to evacuate from floods while having to social distance.
The challenge of attempting both at the same time make neither possible. Migrant workers in India, given only four days’ notice before Lockdown, are walking thousands of miles home starving and dying on their way. George Floyd was murdered and the racism in this country is becoming alarming as its increasingly exposed. The elderly are silently dying without anyone by their side, not even their children, and the solace of having a hand to hold is often not allowed.
The woods that used to scare me are now a welcome refuge. I think of going to other places, but the call of the nearby land and its surviving stone walls are holding me in place. My friend’s grandmother lost her home in the recent explosion in Beirut. Another friend’s parents lost their sitting room while they happened to be in the kitchen. Everything slips away suddenly or a little at a time.
I’ve noticed the way the trees tilt and the slope of the land. It is now August 20th. It is already getting cool at night. So far, there are no people in these pictures, but there are many in my life. There is water, wind, light and pauses of the afternoon and early evening. Looking in the water, I see the reflection of clouds murmuring and flowing underneath and stretching away from where I stand. Appreciating the many good friends I hold dear, I am aware of the sounds of nature. Trembling with wonder, half thinking shall I go further or back inside, I return with a rare flower and place it in a vase on the table by the bedroom door.
My husband wears a special suit when working with a patient with COVID. His face under two masks is well hidden, creating a strange bedside disconnect. In response, he photographs his unmasked face (his first selfie) and attaches the photo to his uniform, just where his heart is. This makes him happy.
Kneeling on the ground, looking over my shoulder, then turning the angle of the camera, supported first by one thing and then by another, methodical and steady I work through the day. As I get to know the land better, I can disappear, let my guard down and feel the air embracing me.
I live in a cabin in the woods in the Catskill Mountains of New York. I have an MFA in painting and drawing from the Yale School of Art, yet fifteen years ago I inherited a large format camera from someone I greatly admire. I taught myself how to use the camera and gradually accomplished what I was striving for in drawing and painting, through photography.
Since breaking my neck in a car crash at the age of twenty, I have developed a strong spiritual life and practice and adapted a way of life simpler and more ritualistic than I had known before. My mother was also an artist. She had a wealth of talent and worked steadily throughout her life, yet her number one role was to take care of her family. Sadly, she left behind a legacy of unwanted, unpublished, unknown work. I realize, now that she has passed, that part of my determination as an artist is to reward her for her efforts and to create a continuum. Being the daughter of refugees, I hold a certain amount of pain from my parents that exists as an undercurrent of pathos in my life and in all of my work."

BUBBLE LIFE #1 by Sally Chapman
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Sally Chapman says, "The Living in the Bubble series came from my experience this spring under stay-at-home orders. It portrays my interior experience of isolation in my home while the world and its problems are outside the walls.
I experience time as a loop that morphs through various rhythms as the objects of home and memory rearrange and repeat in various patterns as they drift though my awareness and focus. All is familiar but becomes detached within the varying arrangements of objects."
Sally Chapman is a photographer living in Lowell, MA. She earned a BFA in ceramics and photography from Michigan State University.
For over twenty years she worked as a ceramic artist in Colorado showing extensively in New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. Moving to California and Massachusetts her attention went to spiritual pursuits seeing that the desire to create art is the same as the desire for spirit.
The magic of capturing images at night inspired her to begin creating artwork again with the camera. Her photographic subjects are often of the urban landscape and neighborhoods, and the natural environment.
Recently she is printing in cyanotype to return to a more tacile process and the mystery that is adds to the imagery.
Cyanotype is a traditional photographic technique invented in the 1800s and renders the photo in shades of blue. To push the medium further, she started to experiment with adding oil pastels to the image.

BE CAUTIOUS by Sonya Tanae Fort

(Click on image for larger view)
Sonya Tanae Fort says, "I have always had an appreciation for photography especially black and white images.
However, I probably would never have picked up a camera if it were not for my nephew Jo’Rai. I ventured into photography in 2013 when he refused to do his high school senior yearbook portraits unless I photographed him. My background is in graphic and web design. I had no previous photography experience yet, he was convinced that I could do it. He said: “You can do it! I have faith in you. I’m telling you, you’ve got this auntie.” I did not want to disappoint my nephew so I did some research on portrait shooting, borrowed a co-worker’s camera, took him to a local park and captured his portraits. I was pleasantly surprised by the results but Jo’Rai was not. He said: “See, I knew you had it in you.” The rest as they say is history.
Shortly thereafter, I purchased my own camera and began practicing on family and friends. I spent the next few years absorbing everything I could about photography from various sources including other photographers who were gracious enough to share their decades of knowledge and experience with me.
In July of 2017, I opened S. Tanae Designs & Photography, my own graphic design and photography studio located in Stoughton, Massachusetts. In addition to commercial photography I enjoy capturing fine art images. In 2018 I became a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). PPA has provided me with countless opportunities, tools, and resources to continue my journey of growing as a photographer and becoming the best photographer I can possibly be.
As a photographer I am blessed with the ability to suspend and memorialize moments in time. Those moments then become part of history so I strive to capture the very essence of each sentient being, inanimate object or landscape that I photograph. I tell their stories in the form of images.
My portraits are a glimpse into the subject’s personality and the raw emotion that they are feeling in a particular moment. With my still life photos, I try to convey how the mundane and ordinary can become something unique and extraordinary from my perspective.
Landscape and wildlife photography allows me to express my love and appreciation for the beauty and wonderment of creation. In all genres of photography, my mission is to create timeless, thought-provoking photographs that I hope will leave an indelible legacy around the world."

HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)
Stanley Banos says, "Covid 19 has affected so many of us, in so many ways, in so many places. Many obey, cooperate or acquiesce; others rebel. No one knows how long it will last or how they will ultimately be affected- physically, financially, socially. It's a life changing crap shoot within the general crap shoot of life. And so... we carry on.
I have photographed 40+ yrs in B&W analog, in 2016 I began shooting digital color. I have worked as a Spec Ed teacher with adolescents officially classified as "Extremely Emotionally Disturbed & Socially Maladjusted" for 17 yrs in Harlem, NY and Oakland, CA. Currently, I work with adults with developmental disabilities in San Francisco, CA. I have run the photoblogs Reciprocity Failure and Based On A True Story for the past 15 yrs."

FREEDOM by Terry Barczak

Terry Barczak says, "On April first I began to walk the streets of Minneapolis to record my response to the COVID 19 pandemic.
I found images of soulful isolation and fear. But also windows to generosity, creativity, and humor. Then on May 25th, George Floyd was murdered by police in south Minneapolis and the city became a focal point for protest and demonstrations. While continuing the photographs of quarantine, I now began to document the aftermath of this brutal murder.
Scenes of destruction, anger, and sadness gripped the city. But soon there evolved a strength of purpose and a shared movement to call for racial equality and systemic change. The collision of these two global events has created an unprecedented and transformative moment in human history. George Floyd, pinned to the ground, pleaded “I can’t breathe!” COVID 19 sufferers say the same thing. It is a plea for life, for freedom, for justice.
I am a Minneapolis based street photographer. Largely self taught, I also studied at Visual studies Workshop in Rochester NY and Lightworks in Minneapolis, In addition to numerous exhibitions of my photographs, I have also served as art director with filmmaker Shelli Ainsworth on short and feature films, taught photography at a variety of institutions and worked in the photography department at Walker Art Center."

He started working professionally from 2018, and since then, has been in magazine publications, worked on album art and worked with a team to create commissioned portraits.
His work has since acclaimed awards such as the ‘Shropshire Rotary club’s young photographer of the year’, and as a finalist in the ‘Pride of Shropshire, Learner award.’
Thomas Oscar Miles says, "Self portraiture is a way for me to find empowerment within myself, transforming into a plethora of diverse characters to showcase a personal spectrum of growth.
Where once I would hide from what dwelled inside of me, photography acted as that release that freed those delicate vulnerabilities.
An early diagnosis of a mild form of Autism has inspired my longing to understand how it is apart of my everyday life, growing and learning as I unravel a more hidden part of myself.
Opting to portray surrealist emotions through a matching style, my work achieves this by capturing a harmony of mediums; embracing my fashion and theatre backgrounds within my work.
I hope to bring fantasy into our everyday lives, seeing magic in even the mundane. This juxtaposition inspires a style that has been recently featured in the magazine ‘Practical Photography.’ The work I create has also been used for personal benefit, as well as independent print sales and for companies, such as a collaboration with Panasonic to test their new LUMIX camera."

BEAUTY #1 by Todd Stuart
Todd Stuart says, "Theses images are part of a series titled "Beauty" and was shot in my back yard in Ohio last June.
I had just finished teaching spring classes remotely and was a little burned out to say the least. It was such beautiful day and the color of the flowers in the backyard inspired me to pull out of my dark mood and celebrate the beauty in the world. This was some of the 1st color work I had done since the start of the pandemic. I had just finished a high-contrast black and white series on the contents of my office garbage can. I needed some beauty and thought others might neeed a reminder as well!"
Todd is an artist, entrepreneur and educator based in Ohio. He is an Associate Teaching Professor and the Director of Arts Management & Entrepreneurship at Miami University.
Todd holds an MFA and an MBA from the University of South Carolina. He also holds a BA from the University of Florida. In the past he worked as an entrepreneur in theatre, design and the consumer goods industry.
He is launching a new venture, ArtsLibra that provides Arts+ Business coaching to artists, arts leaders and arts organizations. He pick-up photography a few years ago and has participated in gallery show across the US and internationally. He currently has his 1st solo show up at Arts Lobby at Miami Univeristy.

HONORABLE MENTION
(Click on image for larger view)
Virgil DiBiase says, "Like most people I’ve been isolated in my home during this pandemic.I am lucky to be surrounded by nature and wildlife as I live in rural Indiana
My photography has transformed exponentially within a short period of time. The past few years I’ve been working on a dementia portrait project and recently, without the ability to socially engage, my photography has transformed into perception and illusions including landscapes, nature, crows, swallows and bats. It’s like holding a magnifying glass and finding joy in the simple moments of lief in this incredibly cruel time in out history."
Virgil DiBiase (b.1963) lives in rural Indiana with his wife and a bunch of equines. He is a full time clinical neurologist, photographer, part time farm hand. His parents were Italian immigrants who moved to rural Salem Ohio in the 1950s. His father was a photographer and taught him how to develop B&W film and make gelatin silver prints in the basement darkroom. Back then everything was in B&W: TV, magazines, newspapers and photography. His father made beautiful family photos with his Leica and made big 8x10 prints. Black and white photography was his first language and so he continues to work in B&W.
He has exhibited his work in many juried group shows including Griffin Museum of Photography, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Colorado Photographic Arts Center, Edition One Gallery, Soho Photo Gallery ,Providence Center for Photographic Arts and photo-eye Gallery in Santa Fe. He’s been published in B&W magazine, LFI Magazine, Burn Magazine, The Cresset, and recently Shots magazine. He’s had solo shows at the Rangefinder Gallery in Chicago, Strimbu Gallery at Valparaiso University and the Workspace Gallery in Lincoln Nebraska.
He’s been short listed three times for the Royal Photographic Society International Print Exhibition and has been a Critical Mass Finalist for the last 3 years. His work is in the permanent collection of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. His work was selected for the Editors Choice award for Center Santa Fe in 2020.

CALLUS- 516 3RD STREET S.E. MEDICINE HAT AB, CANADA by Wes Bell
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Wes Bell says of his series, 'Callus', "While unloading my belongings from the U-Haul moving truck, I became fascinated by a large and evocative irregularity on one of the two very large trees that stands in the front yard of the house that I had grown up in many years ago.
While becoming reacquainted with the old neighborhood, I started noticing more variations of these curious markings on tree trunks. Numerous old childhood memories that were long forgotten or purposely buried deeply in my mind also started to resurface.
In botany, the formation of a thick and hardened tissue develops over time where physical trauma such as the removal of a branch or limb occurs often due to deliberate pruning or lopping causing a wound.
The tree's natural response to the freshly cut exposed surface is to attempt to quickly form a healing tissue to close the wound and prevent canker pathogens and microorganisms from infecting the tree. Its innate survival process, with varied outcomes, permits the plant to protect itself from disease, rot and the susceptibility of premature mortality.
During the first two months of the Covid-19 Pandemic Response Plan lockdown, I photographed sixty-three of these scar-like markings on trees at nearby sites that directly related to my early developmental years starting at my conception and throughout my youth through to my young adult life.
Thinking about my time growing up in this small conservative prairie town and considering the short and long-term repercussions of the global pandemic and the urgency of both the lingering physical and mental health consequences, these healing tissue formations took on a more significant meaning. Callus."
Wes Bell was born and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. From an early age he was fascinated by art, which led him to the studio-intensive program at the Alberta University of the Arts, Calgary, AB, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography.
After school he pursued a career in fashion photography. Bell lived and worked in Milan and London, eventually relocating to New York, while travelling extensively on assignments to the far corners of the world.
His acute sense of design, style and aesthetics are highly respected by fashion editors, leading to editorial spreads in publications such as British GQ and Esquire, Conde Nast Traveler and The New York Times Magazine. Celebrity portraits include Channing Tatum and Olivia Wilde, as well as fashion designer/film director Tom Ford to name a few.
Since departing the fast-paced world of freelance fashion photography, and now residing in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Wes' sole focus is his passion for fine art photography. Gone are the days of large photography crews as now it is just Wes and his square medium format roll film camera.
Today he photographs outdoors on location, responding to the detail and natural beauty in the sparsely populated landscapes found on the edges of nearby towns and cities. The scenes are simple and ordinary. Based on isolating and elevating the unseen, they expose man's encroachment on nature and nature's return of the favor. Attuned to the impermanent, ambiguous and abstract nature of life, the photographs are multilayered in metaphors, aligning our perceptions with our emotions so that they can become accessible and visible.

DEJAH PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA USA by Zachary Handler
(Click on image for larger view)
(Click on image for larger view)
Zachary Z. Handler says, "I have always collected the discarded or left-behind: my favorite item being the receipt I saved from when my father took me to Hooters restaurant for my sixteenth birthday just to see how I reacted to the waitresses.
My visual art is my chance to construct the worlds I saw when I was younger and still wish to inhabit now. I loan my fluorescent beige-colored glasses to my viewers and through this gesture of friendship, I create dialogues about romanticizing bric-a-brac, shopping mall celebrities, and how maybe, just maybe, it’s Maybelline©.
I am a big flirt with even bigger ideas. Magical realism is the muse that guides my hand to balance object upon object. I combine photography with an arts & crafts aesthetic to imbue these souvenirs with all sort of pomp and circumstance; tapping them on their funny bones just to see what happens.
From first love to first heartbreak and back again, these mementos mingle with 1980s ephemera, and take shape inside dioramas I build from thrift store magic. I document these things because they carry a certain something that runs throughout my life—something I want to share with others.
On April 18, 2020 I began a portrait series entitled, ERRANDS. This on-going series documents our shared shelter-in-place experiences from my home to yours. Here’s how it works: I call people - strangers or friends - on video (FaceTime, etc.). First we have a wellness check to be sure someone has asked them, “How are you?” today. Then I set-up my phone somewhere in my home, create a little diorama or ba;ance of domestic objects, or just place the phone atop a pile of laundry, and then I take their portrait. To date, ERRANDS has grown to include 250+ people from across the globe.
I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2003 and a Masters in Arts Administration from Columbia University Teachers College in 2005.
In addition to my work as a visual artist, I have constructed a career where the fields of healthcare and art education intersect to provide community and access programs to individuals who are D/deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind. I have also taught arts education classes, across the country and overseas, to D/deaf and Hard of Hearing youth in foster care.
Currently, I reside in Baltimore, Maryland USA with my grandmacore home decor to the max, my neon pink heart on my sleeve, and my two cats."
